Wild dogs are devouring the victims of Israel’s Bombing Raids Mike WhitneyFor more than a week Israel has been raining down terror on the Lebanon’s unprotected cities and towns. So far, more than 1,200 sites have been completely destroyed laying to waste most of the country’s civilian infrastructure and triggering a humanitarian crisis. The death toll, currently at 350, continues to mount while the number of displaced civilians is estimated at more than 500,000. We know now that Israel’s plan of attack was "finalized more than a year ago" and that Hezbollah’s capturing of the 2 Israeli soldiers was merely a pretext to execute their strategy. Gerald Steinberg, professor of political science at Bar-Ilan University clarified this point saying, "Of all Israel’s wars since 1948, this was the one for which Israel was most prepared. In a sense, the preparation began in 2000, immediately after the Israeli withdrawal"...

Irreligious Questions ... Imad KhadduriSistani had issued the following announcement concerning the onslaught on Lebanon on July 16, 2006, calling upon "The world community needs to move on to stop the continuation of this flagrant aggression". There is not a single mention of the United States of America. The following are a few questions that might be posed to him (as he is an authority to respond): - Who is supporting Israeli to the hilt militarily, financially, diplomatically and politically? - Who is claiming that what is happening to Lebanon are merely "birth pangs of a new Middle East" and that "Israel should ignore calls for a ceasefire"? (...) Hence,- Who issued an edict in March 2003 exhorting the faithful "not to fight the American occupiers" and has not, till now, rescinded it? (It should be noted that all edicts, and only those issued after the occupation, are posted on the www.sistani.org site) - What will be the position of his eminence in the event that the conflict does expand to include an Israeli/American attack on Iran itself, as the neoconservatives and the Israeli government have been clamoring for? What will be the position of his eminence's religious/political parties? Will they defend those that are protecting them in the 'Green Zone' or scramble to assist their political mentors in Tehran?...

Egyptian legal committee warns of Israeli use of chemical weapons against Palestinians in Gaza IMEMC & AgenciesAn Egyptian legal committee has warned of the serious consequences of the Israeli use of chemical weapons against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip for more than a week now, and have called for an international investigation of the claim. The committee for citizens' rights in northern Sinai, adjacent to the Gaza Strip, charged that the Israeli warplanes have been releasing chemical materials against the Palestinian populace in the Strip for the past week. It said that the chemical agents cause extraordinary burns that could turn into cancer and added that they could also cause miscarriages and death of patients especially those suffering chest diseases. The committee said its members saw the warplanes releasing those chemicals from the Egyptian-Palestinian borders...

Iraq's Bloody July Robert Dreyfuss...The violence is not only engulfing Baghdad—home to approximately one-fifth of Iraq’s population—but Basra, Iraq’s second city and its only port. In the north, there is violence in Kirkuk, in what has been, until now, the relatively unscathed heartland of the Shiite south, as well. What is unfolding in Iraq is a staggering tragedy. An entire nation is dying, right in front of us. And the worst part of it is: It may be too late to do anything to stop it. The toll among ordinary Iraqis is immeasurable. Iraqis are dying in ones and twos, in a wave of rampant murders, kidnappings, and assassinations throughout the country. They are dying in fives and tens, through roadside bombs, car bombs, and sectarian violence. And they are dying in large numbers, in scores, as organized armies carry out atrocity after atrocity in brazen, public attacks (...) The blame for this carnage must be laid squarely at the feet of George W. Bush...

The direct air war continues Eli Stephens, Left I on the NewsWhile the U.S. plays the supporting role (albeit one without the entire effort would stop) in Israel's air assault on Lebanon, in Iraq its direct air war, the one which has caused me for more than a year to label the "exit strategy" a "sham," continues. See if you can notice the euphemisms in this article: Iraqi forces backed by a U.S. helicopter battled Sunni gunmen south of Baghdad on Friday, and at least 11 combatants died. U.S. troops killed five Iraqis -- including two women and a child -- in a separate exchange of fire. Let's stick with the second part. Two women and a child died in an "exchange of fire" with U.S. troops, did they?...

The end of Iraq, the neocon gift for you Truth About Iraqis"Iraq as a political project is finished," a top government official told Reuters -- anonymously because the coalition of Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki remains committed in public to a U.S.-sponsored constitution preserving Iraq's unity. "The parties have moved to Plan B," the official said, saying Sunni, ethnic Kurdish and majority Shi'ite blocs were looking at ways to divide power and resources and to solve the conundrum of Baghdad's mixed population of seven million. "There is serious talk of Baghdad being divided into east and west," said the official, who has long been a proponent of the present government's objectives...

IOF Massacre in Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp, Gaza Um KhalilRead about Israel's other genocide in the occupied territories: Hassanain denounced in his report, "the use of the Israeli forces' internationally prohibited missiles that contain chemical materials and burning metals and in addition, have shrapnel in the shape of nails". He pointed out that the injuries received in the hospitals as a result of these missiles are very dangerous because the human tissues and muscles are torn and in addition, the injured suffer from severe bleeding, loss of limbs and broken bones. The spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Radhi Khalid, told PNN that the 20 injured were all children, as the attack occurred very near to a grade school...

When Terror Is Just Fine: Israel's savage behavior in Lebanon John ChuckmanFollowing the assassination of Reinhard Heidrich by Czech partisans in 1942, Hitler’s government executed all the men in the village of Lidici, sent its women and children to concentration camps, and razed the village to the ground. A few weeks later, the barbarism was repeated on the village of Lezaky. Lidici was far from being the worst atrocity of the war, but it rightly came to symbolize heartless oppression by occupiers, what we sometimes today call state terror. I cannot think of another historical example which better parallels Israel’s savage behavior in Lebanon...

“Please forward widely” - Open Letter to United for Peace and Justice Gabriele Zamparini...In your e-mail you remind your supporters of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s call for an immediate ceasefire. Immediately after you have the impudence to write: "Yesterday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki condemned the Israeli aggression and called on the world to take action". Among all the heads of States and Governments you could mention [the entire world but the Axis Washington – London – Tel Aviv] why did you choose the PUPPET Prime Minister of Occupied Iraq? Your organization wrote a letter to "Dear Ambassador Bolton", the US Ambassador to the UN. In this letter, you write: "we want to express our concern over the escalating crisis between Israel, Lebanon, and Palestine". Which "crisis" are you talking about? There is NO "crisis", as all the world but United for Peace and Justice has far too well understood. Your letter to "Dear Ambassador Bolton" continues: "We are gravely concerned about the loss of life on all sides. We condemn all attacks on civilians, and call for the release of political prisoners and POWs held on all sides in this conflict." A masterpiece of hypocrisy. Israel has been attacking civilians in Palestine since even before the State of Israel came to existence...

The Shame of Being An American PAUL CRAIG ROBERTSDo you know that Israel is engaged in ethnic cleansing in southern Lebanon? Israel has ordered all the villagers to clear out. Israel then destroys their homes and murders the fleeing villagers. That way there is no one to come back and nothing to which to return, making it easier for Israel to grab the territory, just as Israel has been stealing Palestine from the Palestinians. Do you know that one-third of the Lebanese civilians murdered by Israel’s attacks on civilian residential districts are children? That is the report from Jan Egeland, the emergency relief coordinator for the UN. He says it is impossible for help to reach the wounded and those buried in rubble, because Israeli air strikes have blown up all the bridges and roads...

Liberals Make Excuses for Israeli Crimes Against Humanity Kurt Nimmo"Don’t get me wrong, I think Hamas and Hezbollah started the hostilities in this case. They sent a terrible message to Israel by attacking from territories Israel withdrew from. That precedent can only do tremendous damage to their own people because it encourages occupation. Then Israel overreacted and has killed far more civilians than necessary in a foolhardy effort to send a message. What’s the message? We’ll kill your women and children if you keep it up?" writes Cenk Uygur, co-host of the Young Turks radio show, on the Huffington Post website. "But at this point, it’s futile and unproductive to be worried about who started it. Instead, we need to focus all of our energies on how to stop it. Unfortunately, we have a couple of roadblocks here at home preventing us from trying to come up with a peaceful and productive solution. One of those roadblocks goes by the name of Bill Kristol." Over on what passes for the Left side of the political spectrum, this opinion is all too prevalent...

Israeli crimes against humanity: Gruesome images of charred and mutilated bodies following Israeli air strikes Commentary by Michel Chossudovsky, Globalresearch.caWe bring to the attention of Global Research readers photographic evidence of Israel sponsored atrocities. Charred and mutilated bodies following Israeli air strikes: While these gruesome images have been released by acredited news agencies including Reuters, Agence France Press and the Associated Press , they are casually dismissed, they are not considered as reliable evidence of war crimes. There is, in this regard, a deliberate media coverup of Israeli sponsored crimes and atrocities. Civilian casualties continue to be presented in media reports as "collateral damage". Laser guided missiles and "smart bombs" are very precise. They rarely miss their target. When residential buildings are targetted, this means civilians will be killed. These actions ordered by Israel's IDF are quite deliberate.
The atrocities in these pictures are beyond description. Israel has being using, quite deliberately, deadly "weapons of mass destruction" in the real sense of the word against Lebanese civilians.

The New York Times and the war in Lebanon: A cynical defense of US-Israeli war crimes Barry Grey, WSWSIn an editorial published Friday, the New York Times weighs in as the liberal voice of American imperialism on the US-backed Israeli war against Lebanon. Under the headline "More Than a Cease-Fire Needed," the Times repeats the propaganda line of Washington and Jerusalem that Israel is the victim and Hezbollah the aggressor. It lines up with the US and Israel in opposing demands that Israel halt its bombing campaign—an assault so flagrantly in breach of international law and so nakedly directed against civilians that Louise Arbour, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, was moved to declare on Wednesday that those "in a position of command and control" could be held personally responsible for war crimes...

Don't leave us alone in Beirut Hanady Salman writing from Beirut, Electronic LebanonSo it's Saturday. The day we fear. It seems the Israelis will have to postpone some of whatever plans they might have: the evacuations are not done yet. The French still have people leaving tomorrow, the Canadians too. There are growing reports about the segregation of the US evacuations: they have priorities ... white ones. I'm sorry I can't confirm, but my friends holding US passports keep telling me about it. I don't have time to investigate it. I'm working with the people fleeing their villages and homes...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 21 July 2006. Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice...In a dispatch posted at 11:35am Makkah time Friday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the Charity Association for Orphans in al-Anbar Province announced on Thursday that 9,000 orphans are facing death as a result of US blockades of villages and neighborhoods around ar-Ramadi, about 110km west of Baghdad. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported Dr. Fawwaz Hamad, the Director of the Charity Society for Orphans, an organization set up following the first Battle of al-Fallujah in spring 2004, declared in a statement that the US blockade on districts of ar-Ramadi and nearby villages had entered its second month. It is a particularly savage blockade because all vital services have been cut off, including water, electricity, and medicine, putting 9,000 children under the age of five in danger of death. Dr. Hamad said that their Society had called on humanitarian, Islamic, and international bodies to act to save the children in ar-Ramadi, but the calls fell on deaf ears...

Reassessing the Hariri assassination in the light of recent events XymphoraReassessing the Hariri assassination in the light of recent events: 1. The Hariri assassination, immediately blamed on Syria (with no evidence other than the lies promoted by Mehlis), led directly to Syria being forced to withdraw its troops from Lebanon. It is obvious that that step was a necessary precondition of Israeli involvement in Lebanon. 2. The huge mystery of the current Israeli adventures is why Israel is sacrificing so much international goodwill in murdering innocent Lebanese civilians, when its stated goal is 'self-defense’ against Hezbollah. In fact, Israel is spending an inordinate amount of time destroying Lebanese infrastructure and making direct attacks against the Lebanese army, the latter particularly odd if Israel really wants the Lebanese army to disarm Hezbollah...

Senator Rick Santorum: Poster Boy for Obnoxious and Desperate Conservatism Walter C. UhlerIf Pennsylvanians are lucky, after November's elections the Keystone State will be rid of its junior U.S. Senator, Rick Santorum. It will not be a moment too soon. Such a blessing would radiate across the United States and, thus, the world. Today, Mr. Santorum is the not-so-proud possessor of poor polling percentages, which indicate that even the good citizens of central and rural Pennsylvania (AKA the mostly "Alabamans" who live between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) have tired of his empty, "bogus nostalgia and right-wing extremist ideology" about "the traditional family". Thus, political desperation best explains Santorum's recent attempt to reframe the debate by announcing to Pennsylvanians and all Americans - during his speech to the National Press Club on July 20, 2006 - that "today the biggest issue facing our children's future is a war...

Soldiers Say They Had Orders to 'Kill All Military Age Males' in Iraq Raid Daisy Cutter, Daily KosA disturbing report from the AP: Soldiers in Murder Case Claim They Were Ordered to 'Kill All Military Age Males' in Iraq Raid EL PASO, Texas Jul 21, 2006 (AP)-- Four U.S. soldiers accused of murdering suspected insurgents during a raid in Iraq said they were under orders to "kill all military age males," according to sworn statements obtained by The Associated Press. The soldiers first took some of the men into custody because they were using two women and a toddler as human shields. They shot three of the men after the women and child were safe and say the men attacked them. "The ROE (rule of engagement) was to kill all military age males on Objective Murray," Staff Sgt. Raymond L. Girouard told investigators, referring to the target by its code name. This is a very chilling statement and horrifying if true. The collective punishment of military age males among rebellious civilian populations is sadly a common tactic of occupying armies. It has become all too familiar in US Military operations. In Fallujah, the Army prohibited military age males from fleeing the city during the late 2004 offensive. The Army also had orders to shoot any men between the ages of 15 and 50 seen on the street, regardless of wether the men were armed or not...

United For Peace and Justice? Perla Zhemchuzhina...On July 18, 2006, during peak wholesale murders at the hands of the Israeli military, United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) issued a statement that condemned the popular resistance movement in Lebanon as it equated it with Israeli actions. This was followed by a call on July 19, in which UFPJ not only completely eliminated Palestine (once again) from the political scene, but also escalated its condemnation of the resistance and declared that it was in violation of International Law. UFPJ went further to echo the US administration’s own political constructs, that the Israeli forces should not use a "disproportionate response" - as if a proportionate one exists, and as if the violence of colonists is just a mere "response". UFPJ’s statements join the US-proxy regimes of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt, in holding the popular resistance movement responsible for the savagery of Zionist colonial conquest - a textbook example of blaming the victim...
