Gaza massacres continue
Lenin's Tomb
...So, that's Israel's strategy in Gaza: bomb civilian houses, pummel the infrastructure further and keep up the pressure on those ambulances. It looks and feels like sadism: slow, suffocating torture, the relentless hammer of military blows, starvation, thirst, disease, the total destruction of everything the Palestinians have been able to build for themselves. Indeed, racist colonial states often pursue sadism as state policy: it was a fairly commonplace practise in the 19th and 20th centuries. The limit on this was that most of these states wanted to exploit the hell out of the people they ruled: Israel simply wants the Palestinians to disappear...

The Evening Scumbag
Lenin's Tomb
It goes without saying that the Standard is a right-wing piece of shit that sticks to other similarly minded pieces of shit. But this front page is fucking atrocious. Israel is murdering civilians with impugnity, in the eyes of the whole world, and the Evening Standards cites Israeli 'fears' that they are being used as 'sandbags'. Israel is deliberately bombing civilian areas, the photographic evidence of which is shocking, stomach-churning, obscene. Yet the Standard suddenly finds itself cast as fucking Rumpelstiltskin, spinning this awful reality into PR gold. Evidence of Israel's atrocities becomes evidence of Hezbollah's terrible venality: civilians deliberately murdered by Israel become "human sandbags"...

Credibility
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Two days ago, I watched Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres being interviewed on MSNBC, and denying categorically that Israel had any intention of entering Lebanon. The next day, Israeli troops crossed the border into Lebanon (albeit in a limited manner). Yesterday, all over the news was the claim that Israel had dropped 23 tons of bombs on a "senior leadership bunker" in Beirut. Hizballah denied it, claiming that "the strike hit a building that was under construction for a mosque." Today CNN's Alessio Vinci, along with other reporters, visited the site, and reported that, as far as they could tell, the site was, you guessed it, a mosque under construction...

The Israel we know
Khaled Amayreh
Palestinians under military occupation have been watching with helpless anguish the gruesome images of Israel's campaign of murder and horror in Lebanon. For a people who have just buried an additional 100, victim to Israeli state terrorism which also targets schools, bridges and power stations, the merciless killing of Lebanese civilians and wanton destruction of Lebanon's infrastructure, clarion testimony to Israeli criminal savagery, are scenes all too familiar. Equally familiar for the Palestinians has been the brazen approval by the Bush administration of Israel's murderous aggression, as well as the impotent silence and betrayal by brotherly Arab states and segments of the international community as a whole...

The resistance will go on
Omayma Abdel-Latif
In his second televised speech since the outbreak of Israel's barbaric attacks on Lebanon, Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah warned that if the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine was defeated at the hands of Israel, "the Arab world -- governments and peoples -- will be humiliated forever and the Zionists will reign supreme." This was the second time in less than three days that Nasrallah warned against attacking the resistance. In his first speech he repeatedly said that the Arabs had two options: either succumb to what the Zionists -- backed by the US and some Arab regimes -- are dictating, or stand united and face up to Israel...

Betrayal of the Empire or Fealty to Humanity?
Confessions and Reflections of a Recovering White Middle Class Hegemon

Jason Miller
What a profound analysis of the current crisis in the Middle East. Bill Fitch, the former coach of the Boston Celtics, used to tell his players to "keep it simple, stupid." Apparently the "leader of the free world" is a devout follower of Fitch’s philosophy. It may have been effective in coaching an NBA team, but unfortunately for the world, Bush’s habit of ignoring complexities has resulted in multiple disasters. Aside from demonstrating the true depth of his vocabulary and violating his own professed concern with "Christian values" in using the expletive, our beloved leader seems to have forgotten that there is no clear evidence that Syria exerts enough influence over Hezbollah to get them to "stop doing this shit". But then again, since when does "W" yield for lack of evidence?...

Cordesman: Losing in Iraq?
Robert Dreyfuss
Tony Cordesman, a sober-minded conservative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, has long been skeptical of the neoconservative project for the Middle East. In a recent commentary, he wonders if in fact we are losing in Iraq. He has been waxing pessimistic for a while, but in this piece, excerpted below, it seems that Cordesman is beginning wonder wheher the whole thing is lost. Importantly, he points out that the violence is not confined to Baghdad, where 14,000 have died since January. Basra and Kirkuk, too, are falling into civil war..

Tomgram: Karen Greenberg on Bush's Redacted Reality
Tom Engelhardt & Karen Greenberg
Imagine a government in which the names of those who worked as key aides in the office of the second (if not, arguably, the first) most important official in the country were not available. Oh gosh, there is such a government -- and it's ours. Journalist Robert Dreyfuss set out to do a report for the American Prospect magazine on the various individuals Vice President Cheney had gathered to help him run the most powerful vice-presidency in American history -- functionally, his own shadow National Security Council -- and when he called, asking for those names and their positions as well as possible interviews with them, here's what ensued...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Thursday, 20 July 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice.
In a dispatch posted at 12:20pm Makkah time midday Thursday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces fired a rocket barrage at the US base in the city of al-Qa’im near the Syrian border at 5am local time, around dawn on Thursday. The al-Qa’im correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the Resistance fired five rockets into the American base, which used to be the main train station in the city...

Aid agencies hampered by Israeli strikes
Report, IRIN,
Humanitarian agencies working in Lebanon say their work is being hampered by continued Israeli attacks on aid convoys and access routes. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) yesterday reiterated its 13 July appeal to both parties involved in the conflict in Lebanon to "respect humanitarian volunteers and workers and the Red Cross and Red Crescent symbols". This call follows an attack on Tuesday by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on a convoy of ambulances and trucks, sent by the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent (UAERC), on the road between Damascus and Beirut...

Humanitarian crisis unfolds in south
Report, IRIN
Relief agencies working in the south of Lebanon say there is a shortage of medical supplies, particularly for infants and children. In addition, attempts to provide medical assistance to victims are being thwarted by the bombardment. Hisham Hassan, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) spokesman in Lebanon, told IRIN: "The problem is not whether we are facing a shortage in ambulances or not. It is in getting help through to the victims." He said that in the southern town of Srifa, where more than 40 civilians had been killed by Israeli bombs, "the Civil Defence cars couldn't get near the town to rescue any survivors because the Israelis attacked all the town's entrances and exits throughout the day"...

Duck's Head Soup
Jeff Wells, Rigorous Intuition
...Israel's war upon Lebanon would be a disproportionate response if Israel were actually responding to the kidnapping of two of its soldiers. It isn't, of course. (If it were, we may have seen a limited cross-border incursion that resembled a rescue mission, rather than these blunt-force deep attacks on Lebanese infrastructure.) Rather the war, like most wars of aggression, is a response to the pathological necessities of the aggressor's ideology. America's Countdown: Tehran has been stuck at 20 minutes and holding for a couple of months now, derailed by Iran's rational posture regarding its nuclear ambitions and the ongoing thwarting of anything approaching even the Bush administration's benchmark for a casus belli. Israel's hawks, by smashing in the back door, are baiting Iran to action, which would goad the US to crash through the front. Israeli military claims, trumpeted by FoxNews, that the Haifa rockets were fired by Iranian Guard units, and the absurd suggestion that Hezbollah intends to transport their captured soldiers to Iran, say forcefully that this isn't about Lebanon, though for now it will be mostly the Lebanese who perish...

US Complicit In Israel
Dahr Jamail
An acquaintance of mine in Lebanon just sent me this email: "A friend of mine just called and told me of a massacre: civilian building destroyed in Tyre by Israeli aggression. There, Zouhair Edde's mother has been killed. Rayaan Qudsi has been killed along with her two daughters. This is a conservative number of martyrs thus far. This building is where refugees typically hide." This is but an infinitesimal example of what is being carried out by the Israeli military apparatus against the civilian population of Lebanon on an hourly basis. The official lines of the US and Israeli governments are that the destruction in Lebanon and Gaza are due to two Israeli soldiers being taken prisoner. This incredible display of willful amnesia omits the fact that at least 9,000 Palestinians are currently being held in Israeli prisons, 1,000 of which have had no charges brought against them...

The shame of the puppeteers
Gulf News |
War crimes could have been committed in the Middle East, alleges UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour. Note the qualification "could have" when it is plain for all to see that war crimes are, indeed, being committed in Lebanon and Gaza by the constant Israeli attacks. Arbour continues, "Indiscriminate shelling of cities constitutes a foreseeable and unacceptable targeting of civilians. Similarly, the bombardment of sites with alleged military significance, but resulting invariably in the killing of innocent civilians, is unjustifiable". Why does it take the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to speak out on the devastation being caused by Israel? Why not instead the so-called leaders of the "free world"?..

Beirut To Tehran
Jim Lobe
The week-old Israeli-Hezbollah conflict is likely to boost the chances of U.S. military action against Iran, according to a number of regional experts who see a broad consensus among the U.S. political elite that the ongoing hostilities are part of a broader offensive being waged by Tehran against Washington across the region. While Israel-centred neo-conservatives have been the most aggressive in arguing that Hezbollah's July 12 cross-border attack could only have been carried out with Iran's approval, if not encouragement, that view has been largely accepted and echoed by the mainstream media, as well as other key political factions, including liberal internationalists identified with the Democratic Party...

Israel’s historical use of violence
Jonathan Cook
The general surprise that Lebanese civilians are taking the brunt of Israel’s onslaught -- and the unwillingness in some quarters of the media to report the fact -- reflects a poor understanding of Israel’s historical use of violence. Since its birth six decades ago, Israel has always been officially "going after the terrorists", but its actions have invariably harmed civilians in an indiscriminate manner...

Blackmail by bombs
Azmi Bishara.
....Israel has nothing to show for ten days of barbaric vandalism and the deliberate targeting of civilians. It cannot claim a single military victory against the Lebanese resistance. It can, though, point proudly to whole residential quarters that have been reduced to rubble, to the burned out hulks and ruins of countless wharfs, factories, bridges, roads, tunnels, electricity generators and civil defence buildings. In terms of explosive and destructive power Israel has thrown an atom bomb on Lebanon, it is the Israeli Hiroshima....
