On the road to Damascus
Gabriele Zamparini
The current horde of barbarians that has brought hell to Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, [with Syria and Iran on the bombing waiting list] may have some few precedents in human history but the racist hypocrisy that goes with it certainly doesn’t (...) As a searchlight piercing the gloomy hypocrisy, journalist and activist Felicity Arbuthnot brings us a piece of reality in her moving "Letters from Baghdadis": A's letter ended with an illuminating insight into American tactics in Iraq: 'The Americans keep Iraq in a state of absolute chaos, they call it: 'positive instability.' On the receiving end of our Free World’s benevolence the brainwashing propaganda doesn’t work and people can still think properly and put us to shame. But that propaganda works perfectly well at home. In Italy for example, Piero Fassino, the man leading what’s left of the party founded by Antonio Gramsci, said that the very "existence" of Israel is "really in danger". The leader of the largest party in Romano Prodi’s government’s coalition, continued: "Every democratic country, and therefore also Italy, must make clear to the Islamic world and to its ruling elites that never the democratic world, and in the first place Europe, will accept to put in discussion or even to put in precariousness the State of Israel and its existence". But don’t blame just the hot temperatures of the Italian summer. The Jewish Lobby organized a vigil pro-Israel, present much of the Italian nomenklatura together with the Israeli Ambassador to Italy, the above mentioned Fassino, the Zionist Mayor of Rome Valter Veltroni and – life can be really ironic sometimes – the former neo-fascist [but still very right-wing] and former Italian Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini...

From the River to the Sea
Lenin's Tomb
...They say, over and over, that Israel must defend itself. Israel has the right to defend itself. Israel is 'under attack' by 'extremist elements', and therefore it must respond. Certainly, it is conceded, Israel should be more restrained but the sympathetic viewer, listener and reader would understand the human impulse that drives them to be zealously protective of their population. This is the bullshit that we are being told, not only by the Prime Minister on behalf of his Washington masters, but also in more or less sophisticated ways by every media outlet in this country. Of course it's a lie - it was Israel that stole Gaza and the West Bank, Israel that subjected the Palestinians to an ever worsening prison regime, Israel that engaged in ethnic cleansing, and continues to do so. They talk about the capture of Corporal Shalit - whose name we know while the many many victims of Israeli kidnappings, most of whom are civilians, many of whom are children, are nameless - and the capture of two soldiers on the border with Lebanon. These are 'kidnappings' (while the abduction of much of the Palestinian government and many of its civilians is merely an 'arrest')...

'Lebanon crisis an international conspiracy'
Firas Al-Atraqchi, Aljazeera.net
As'ad AbuKhalil, author of Bin Laden, Islam, and America's New 'War on Terrorism' as well as The Battle for Saudi Arabia: Royalty, Fundamentalism, and Global Power, believes the recent violence is a symptom of an international conspiracy under way to enforce UN resolution 1559, which calls for the disarmament of militia groups in Lebanon - a reference to Hezbollah...

Hezbollah is the Wild Card
Kurt Nimmo
...In fact, the mass murder campaign currently underway in Lebanon has little to do with Hezbollah, as our pro-Israel corporate media tells us, ad nauseam. Instead, it has to do with "order out of chaos," rendering Arabs and Muslims helpless, destroying their societies. It has to do with balkanizing the Middle East, reducing once organized societies to mutually hostile tribal and ethnic factions, forever at each others throats, and thus exploitable and malleable. It is an updated version of British colonialism, the time-tested divide and conquer strategy. If you require and example of this, look no further than Iraq where "civil war," externally imposed, works like an acid on the political and social fabric of the country, if indeed you can characterize what remains of Iraq a country. It is devolving into a patchwork of mutually antagonistic factions, tribes, religious sects, a situation created by false flag terrorism straight out of the neocon Pentagon...

Haitham Sabbah
Photo caption: Israeli girls write messages on a shell at a heavy artillery position near Kiryat Shmona, in northern Israel, next to the Lebanese border, Monday, July 17, 2006.(AP Photo/Sebastian Scheiner) Hate, disgust, extreme…. I don’t know what word can describe these photos. And they say that we are teaching our kids hate to Israelis! Thank you, Israel kids, we received your gifts...

Bush's Bloodbath in Babylon: 'Coincidence' and Consequences
Chris Floyd
...Can it be a total coincidence that the hellstorm of murder and mayhem that has now turned Baghdad into "a skeleton of a city" began just after Bush and al-Maliki announced their ballyhooed "security push," pouring thousands of new troops and police into the capital's streets? Can it be a total coincidence that much of the new violence has been carried out by "men dressed in the uniforms of the Iraqi police," to use the timid euphemism adopted by the mainstream media, and by militia forces associated with perhaps the key political player in the new "sovereign" government, the hidebound religious crank Motqada al-Sadr? (...) Can it be a total coincidence that the steady rise in militia violence – now reaching apocalyptic heights – has followed the Bush Regime's open bruiting of the "Salvador Option" – i.e., employing militias and death squads as part of "counterinsurgency" operations in Iraq, just like those Reagan-Bush glory days of yore, when the ditches and back alleys of Central America ran red with the blood of innocent thousands slaughtered by U.S.-backed, U.S.-bought terrorists?...

A non-Iraqi employee of the I.S.T threatens the Defense counsel and violates rights
Defense and Support Committee of President Saddam Hussein, his Comrades and all P.o.W.s and Detainees in Iraq. (ISNAD)
In an unprecedented act in the history of Iraq or international courts, an employee in the so-called the defense office of the Iraqi special tribunal (I.S.T), sent a threat to the defense committee for president Saddam Hussien and his comrades . In a letter sent to lawyer khalil Dolimi on July 11th 2006 the president of the defense committee , William Wielly threatened the defense lawyers chosen by their clients that they may be replaced by other lawyers appointed by the court, and that they may be dismissed from the case and lose their licenses to practice law" . This letter ignores all and every legal, professional and human value, and it violates the basic rules of a fair trial. Besides it breaches the law of this court itself...

Why is Israel Back in Gaza?
Ramzy Baroud
...But what is hardly unmistakable is that by maintaining low intensity warfare in Gaza, Israel is creating the perfect cover up to its army bulldozers to partition the rest of the West Bank and Jerusalem in accordance with the second phase of Olmert’s Disengagement Plan: which intends to slice up the West Bank into various enclaves with no physical continuity, and place its population under an effective, long term, collective incarceration in Bantustan-like areas, to be allowed or denied movement at the behest of an Israeli solider. The plan is being actualized in record time, yet few seem to notice, a reality that Israel will strive to maintain...

The American People Are the Target for Corporate Media Censorship
Hassan El-Najjar
...I have observed recently that US news media have been publishing news reports about NATO occupation forces killing scores of Taliban resistance fighters by air strikes on their camps or bases. I quickly alerted readers that it was impossible for Taliban fighters to have camps or bases in occupied Afghanistan, which is totally under the control of the US-led NATO occupation forces. However, the same daily news have continued, which have made no sense until today. In the following AP news report, the US-led NATO occupation forces admit for the first time that Taliban resistance fighters are in control of certain areas in southern Afghanistan. Now, the previous puzzling news reports are making sense finally. This means that the Taliban resistance fighters have been in control of these areas for weeks, since the first time news reports mentioned bombing Taliban camps, bases, or centers. We were not told about it. So what? Well, here we go again. The American people know very little about what's going on in all the wars America was dragged to in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The embedded US corporate media has been reduced to Third-World-level media, spreading only what the government wants the people to know....

Dispatch from Palestine - Nablus: "It is our life"
Silvia Cattori, Signs of the Times
Every night the city of Nablus is shaken by the sounds of war, sounds that drive away sleep. One awakens with a start, not knowing if one has slept, not slept, or if we are in a waking nightmare. There is shooting, nearby explosions resonate, go off in the distance, and return as an echo. You don't know what is happening or where it is happening. At first, you are very worried, then you stop thinking about it. One waits for daybreak with resignation. The people around tell you it is like that every day of the year here in the district of Nablus, that nothing has changed since 2000, that it is simply part of the panoply of the war of terror waged by Israel, added on top of the countless other repressive measures (..) The people are at the end of their ropes. Israel has humiliated them, starved them, taken away all of their rights. They live here as prisoners. When people present themselves at the checkpoints - which are military zones where the soldiers amuse themselves by installing a reign of terror - they are humiliated, arrested, beaten. After six years of deprivation and massacres, one senses the people are all the more revolted and on edge that, beyond the persecutions of Israel, that they will also undergo the strangulation by Europe. A scandalous Europe that punishes and starves an entire people for having voted for Hamas. It only reinforces their spirit of resistance...

Hadji Girl
Bob Boldt
Of course the lyrics herein presented are over the top and deeply offensive on more levels than I would care to list. They really were written by a Marine Corporal, Joshua Belile of the Marine Light/Attack Helicopter Squadron 167[1] and have stirred quite a controversy. Belile's performece on videotape (and the streaming video I witnessed) included a hoard of cheering fellow Marines. Even though the size of the audience was unable to be determined from the video, it was my impression that a sizable number of Marines were amused by the song and heartily approved of the sentiments expressed. Is it safe to say that all these Marines were deranged "rotten apples"? If this is indeed the case, there must be a lot of them in Iraq. I believe that this song well characterizes the callous attitude our troops have come to accept as standard operating procedure in dealings with the local "Hadjis" as they call the Iraqis (...) I guess some (me included) would say that our poor soldiers are as much victims as the poor Iraqis. It's just that an inordinate number of the members of the second group of victims (the Iraqis) are getting starved, raped, murdered and tortured while the other group (the "victims" with all the really neat weapons and the immunity) have become monsters...

Saddam ‘warns Syria against alliance with Iran’
Roads to Iraq
I warned continuously that the US and Iran both had some kind of secret agreement, the US removed the Saddam government and Taliban in Afghanistan both where the biggest enemies of Iran, the US backed pro-Iran governemnt in Iraq, and turning a blind eye on Iranians infiltrating Iraqi police, Army, and governemnt. Today Saddam supported and agreed with this idea. He warned Syria to not to go very far with their relation with Iran. I am convinced that the Iranian and US agendas have met in Iraq and elsewhere in the Arab world and Arabs are now placed between the US-Israeli hammer and the Iranian anvil...

"The Insane Brutality of the State of Israel"
Atrocities in the Promised Land

KATHLEEN CHRISTISON, former CIA analyst
Words fail; ordinary terms are inadequate to describe the horrors Israel daily perpetrates, and has perpetrated for years, against the Palestinians. The tragedy of Gaza has been described a hundred times over, as have the tragedies of 1948, of Qibya, of Sabra and Shatila, of Jenin -- 60 years of atrocity perpetrated in the name of Judaism. But the horror generally falls on deaf ears in most of Israel, in the U.S. political arena, in the mainstream U.S. media. Those who are horrified -- and there are many -- cannot penetrate the shield of impassivity that protects the political and media elite in Israel, even more so in the U.S., and increasingly now in Canada and Europe, from seeing, from caring...

My disgust with the media
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
I'm citing a Washington Post article, but really I could find this exact formulation from every single print and broadcast media outlet, at least in the U.S.: Early today, Israeli warplanes pounded Hezbollah's stronghold in south Beirut. This is so easy to read right past and just take for granted. You aren't being told that Israel bombed a Hezbollah headquarters, which they have done (and has been reported). You are being told that Israel is bombing an entire area of a city, because it is a "stronghold" of Hezbollah...

Friendly Fire: Americans Caught in a Bush-Backed Circle of Slaughter
Chris Floyd
U.S. and British Navies Join Evacuation Efforts (NYT) Excerpt: A five-ship United States naval group and a British flotilla steamed toward Lebanon today to help in a large and hastily organized evacuation — and perhaps to send an implicit message — as thousands of foreign nationals continued to flee the violence by helicopter, passenger ships and chartered ferries, or by bus or car to Syria. …And many Americans said they were distressed to learn they would have to pay their own evacuation costs. (...) Well, here's something you don't see everyday: a nation evacuating its citizens so they won't be killed by their close and faithful ally. Is this not a tacit admission that Israel is carrying out indiscrminate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure – i.e., committing state terrorism? ...But we have certainly arrived at yet another surreal moment in the Bush Imperium: American taxpayers are paying millions of dollars to fuel a war machine that is menacing the lives of thousands of, er, American taxpayers – who are having to pay to be rescued from the war machine they are already funding with their taxes...

50 dead in Iraq car bomb attack
AFP
At least 54 people, mostly day labourers, were killed and dozens of others wounded as a car bomb blew up on Tuesday in the centre of Iraq's Shiite shrine city of Kufa, security and medical sources said. At least 105 others were wounded in the attack, said Dr Mundher al-Adhari, chief health official of the southern city of Najaf, adding that most of the victims were young men. Witnesses said a car drove up and parked in the square in front of Kufa's grand mosque, immediately attracting a crowd of people assuming it was a contractor looking for day labourers...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Monday, 17 July 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice. http://www.freearabvoice.org
...In a dispatch posted at 6:25pm Makkah time Monday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US forces warplanes struck a home in the al-'Aziziyah area of centeral ar-Ramadi at midday Monday, destroying the target house and also the one next door. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a medical source in ar-Ramadi General Hospital who asked not to be identified as saying that the treacherous American bombardment of the civilian dwellings resulted in the deaths of three local people with seven more civilians injured. The wounded included two children and three women all of whom were undergoing treatment in the intensive care ward of the hospital...

G8 powers sanction Israeli aggression in Lebanon
World Socialist Web Site
Statement of the Editorial Board
The summit of the Group of Eight adjourned Monday on the sixth day of brutal Israeli air strikes on Lebanon, with the leaders of the major imperialist regimes effectively endorsing the pulverizing of a small nation by a US client state, armed to the teeth by Washington. As US-supplied bombs and missiles, fired by US-supplied warplanes, rained down on Lebanese cities and towns, the Bush administration took the lead in blocking even a token call for a ceasefire. While the US media seeks to present the current crisis in terms of equal suffering—Israeli civilians hit by Hezbollah rockets, Lebanese civilians hit by Israeli bombs—the reality is far different. More than 200 Lebanese have been killed and a billion dollars worth of damage inflicted on their country, compared to 24 Israelis killed, nearly half of them soldiers killed in combat against Hezbollah fighters...

GI Special 4G18: Straws In The Wind - July 18, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
n "Supporting troops takes more than slapping a magnet on your vehicle" (Back Talk, July 3), Marine Corps Capt. Josh Gibbs asks some important questions regarding how Americans choose to show their support for our military in this time of war.
Frankly, I don’t believe his questions went far enough.
While the charitable campaigns he mentioned are all wonderful organizations worthy of support, there is something far simpler and far more basic to our existence as a country that we should be doing to support our troops.
I ask America: Do you really want to support your troops?
If so, the answer is simple: Pay your taxes, and don’t fight tax hikes.

Turkey signals it's prepared to enter Iraq
LOUIS MEIXLER, Associated Press Writer
Turkish officials signaled Tuesday they are prepared to send the army into northern Iraq if U.S. and Iraqi forces do not take steps to combat Turkish Kurdish guerrillas there — a move that could put Turkey on a collision course with the United States. Turkey is facing increasing domestic pressure to act after 15 soldiers, police and guards were killed fighting the guerrillas in southeastern Turkey in the past week...
