From 1990 to 1999, the cancer rate rose 242 percent in southern Iraq alone and birth defects increased tenfold. Before the 1991 Gulf War, children made up 13 percent of cancer cases. By 2002, 56 percent of all cancer cases were in children under 5. Of the 580,400 U.S. troops that served in the six-week Gulf War, 11,000 had died by the year 2000, and 325,000 are on permanent disability for physical or emotional injuries. Only 269 died in combat, while only 457 were wounded...

They know that the screams of Hoda in Palestine and of Abeer in Iraq are variations on the cries of an Arab nation that is in the process of being violated and debased by the US and Israel in the name of the fight against terrorism. However, the very self-evidence of this begs a question. This question has not so much to do with what motivates the US and Israel -- the one driven by insatiable greed and power-hungriness to make a grab at Iraq's enormous reserves of oil at a time when the Arab world is at one of its weakest ebbs ever; the other intent on taking advantage of the same circumstances in order to end the Palestinian problem in a way that promotes and secures the Zionist land grab. One can grasp these motives, as distasteful as one finds them. But what one fails to grasp is the degree of indolence that seems to have infected Arab regimes in the face of these enterprises. Can they possibly believe that they can safeguard their interests if the American and Israeli projects succeed?...

Omayma Abdel-Latif...But according to many accounts, the Al-Jihad district massacre proved the worst sectarian incident so far, since the outbreak of sectarian violence. Eye witnesses said armed men wearing civilian clothes set up fake checkpoints in the streets of Al-Jihad district. They stopped passengers and cars and asked for their IDs, then shot those who were Sunnis. Some armed men were also seen raiding houses and killing the inhabitants. The Iraqi Az-Zaman newspaper reported that hundreds of soldiers from the Iraqi army were seen roaming the area and closed down all the entrances to and from the district, while turning a blind eye to the bloodletting taking place. The identity of the killers was no secret on this occasion. Sheikh Abdul-Samad Al-Obeidy, the imam of Fakery Shanshal Mosque in Al-Jihad district, accused the Al-Mahdi militia of committing the atrocity. But there is no public support, and after the lies about Iraq's 'nookular' weapons, little faith in government claims of Iran's threat to the US. So, Israel starts provocations, like assassinating the Palestinian Chief of Police and shelling the beach at Gaza, actions intended to provoke a response. Then, it is claimed a soldier is "kidnapped", and even though nobody knows who kidnapped him or where he is, Israel launches a "rescue mission" into Gaza which is later revealed to have been planned long before any soldier was captured, and was intended to bring down the Democratically elected government of Palestine. With Gaza in flames, the trick gets repeated, with two more soldiers reported kidnapped, and another front opened into Lebanon. This is the "Attack on Pearl Harbor"...

Pour out your fury upon the people of Lebanon and Gaza
Gilad Atzmon , peacepalestine...Yet, the Israeli reaction to attacks by Palestinian militants and Hezbollah is rather bizarre. Although, both Palestinian militants and Hezbollah were originally targeting legitimate military targets, Israeli retaliation was clearly aiming against civilian targets, civil infrastructures and mass killing directed against an innocent population. It doesn’t take a genius to realise that this is not really the way to win a war or confront that particular sort of combat known as guerrilla warfare. Sectarian rhetoric
Ghazwan HadiThe predominantly Sunni Al-Adhamiya district, the predominantly Shia Al-Sadr City, the predominantly Sunni Al-Anbar province, the predominantly-Shia Missan district... this is how Iraqi locales are depicted every day in the media. Whether discussing security or politics, economy or services, the labelling is there for all to see and hear. If anything, such rhetoric tells the Shias to leave cities in which they are not a majority, and the Sunnis to do the same. This message, hideous as it is, is latent in the language of the media. The media may seem objective, informative, even hi-tech, yet its message can be as crude as it is tendentious. Still it broadcasts this same message day in, day out. What next? What happens once demography catches up with prophecy? What happens once the districts of Baghdad and other Iraqi cities turn into ethnically pure zones? Once the factional lines are drawn, do we have much hope of avoiding a sectarian war? Invisible hands are at work, inspiring the media, dictating its message...

Today in IraqAn Apache attack helicopter crashed during a combat patrol southwest of Baghdad, but both pilots survived, the U.S. military said. The statement did not say what caused the crash nor give a precise location. However, an Iraqi army official in the area said the helicopter was shot down in the village of Grakoul, located near the town of Youssifiyah about eight miles southwest of Baghdad. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to media. The names and the conditions of the two pilots were not released, but the statement said they were flown to a U.S. military facility north of the capital.
