Weapon of mass destruction Bud Deraps, People's Weekly World NewspaperThe World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that Iraq, with a population of about 26 million, in the year 2000 had a total of 195,374 new cases of cancer and 126,677 cancer deaths, most of them children. From 1990 to 1999, the cancer rate rose 242 percent in southern Iraq alone and birth defects increased tenfold. Before the 1991 Gulf War, children made up 13 percent of cancer cases. By 2002, 56 percent of all cancer cases were in children under 5. Of the 580,400 U.S. troops that served in the six-week Gulf War, 11,000 had died by the year 2000, and 325,000 are on permanent disability for physical or emotional injuries. Only 269 died in combat, while only 457 were wounded...

Hoda and Abeer Hassan Nafaa*...The Arab people have no doubt that there is an organic link between the events in Iraq and those in Palestine. They know that the screams of Hoda in Palestine and of Abeer in Iraq are variations on the cries of an Arab nation that is in the process of being violated and debased by the US and Israel in the name of the fight against terrorism. However, the very self-evidence of this begs a question. This question has not so much to do with what motivates the US and Israel -- the one driven by insatiable greed and power-hungriness to make a grab at Iraq's enormous reserves of oil at a time when the Arab world is at one of its weakest ebbs ever; the other intent on taking advantage of the same circumstances in order to end the Palestinian problem in a way that promotes and secures the Zionist land grab. One can grasp these motives, as distasteful as one finds them. But what one fails to grasp is the degree of indolence that seems to have infected Arab regimes in the face of these enterprises. Can they possibly believe that they can safeguard their interests if the American and Israeli projects succeed?...

Who rules Iraq? Omayma Abdel-Latif...But according to many accounts, the Al-Jihad district massacre proved the worst sectarian incident so far, since the outbreak of sectarian violence. Eye witnesses said armed men wearing civilian clothes set up fake checkpoints in the streets of Al-Jihad district. They stopped passengers and cars and asked for their IDs, then shot those who were Sunnis. Some armed men were also seen raiding houses and killing the inhabitants. The Iraqi Az-Zaman newspaper reported that hundreds of soldiers from the Iraqi army were seen roaming the area and closed down all the entrances to and from the district, while turning a blind eye to the bloodletting taking place. The identity of the killers was no secret on this occasion. Sheikh Abdul-Samad Al-Obeidy, the imam of Fakery Shanshal Mosque in Al-Jihad district, accused the Al-Mahdi militia of committing the atrocity. He also pointed the finger at the Iraqi police forces, who did not move to prevent the killings...

Dubya Dubya Three Michael Rivero, WRH... So now we have the US Government wanting war in Iran. But there is no public support, and after the lies about Iraq's 'nookular' weapons, little faith in government claims of Iran's threat to the US. So, Israel starts provocations, like assassinating the Palestinian Chief of Police and shelling the beach at Gaza, actions intended to provoke a response. Then, it is claimed a soldier is "kidnapped", and even though nobody knows who kidnapped him or where he is, Israel launches a "rescue mission" into Gaza which is later revealed to have been planned long before any soldier was captured, and was intended to bring down the Democratically elected government of Palestine. With Gaza in flames, the trick gets repeated, with two more soldiers reported kidnapped, and another front opened into Lebanon. This is the "Attack on Pearl Harbor"...

Baghdad Starts to Collapse as Its People Flee a Life of Death James Hider, The Times of London...A local journalist told me bitterly this week that Iraqis find it ironic that Saddam Hussein is on trial for killing 148 people 24 years ago, while militias loyal to political parties now in government kill that many people every few days. But it is not an irony that anyone here has time to laugh about. They are too busy packing their bags and wondering how they can get out alive. My driver and his extended family are now refugees living in The Times offices in central Baghdad. Ali is also trying to persuade his stubborn family to leave home and move into our hotel. Those that can are leaving the country. At Baghdad airport, throngs of Iraqis jostle for places on the flights out - testimony to the breakdown in Iraqi society...

Pour out your fury upon the people of Lebanon and Gaza Gilad Atzmon , peacepalestine...Yet, the Israeli reaction to attacks by Palestinian militants and Hezbollah is rather bizarre. Although, both Palestinian militants and Hezbollah were originally targeting legitimate military targets, Israeli retaliation was clearly aiming against civilian targets, civil infrastructures and mass killing directed against an innocent population. It doesn’t take a genius to realise that this is not really the way to win a war or confront that particular sort of combat known as guerrilla warfare. I would argue that once again the Israeli government serves us with a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of the Israeli collective psyche. I will try to elaborate on this issue...

GANGS AND ROBBERS Ali Hussein Al Najafi, Al-MoharerThe sectarian gangs who were brought to Iraq by President George W. Bush and his Zionist neo-cons are terrorizing the Iraqi people and stealing the wealth of Iraq. The gangs of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq, The Dawa Party of Jawad-Nuri Al Maliki and others are competing among each other in robbing the Iraqi petroleum and selling it for a premium to Iran, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Billions of dollars are being stolen, and members of the illegal government are benefiting from this robbery, in which one of those who engineered the lies for invading Iraq, Ahmad Chalabi brought a printing machine with him, and printed a large amount of currency to trade and steal the wealth of the Iraqi people, a large sum was found in his "house"...

Britain prepares secrets case over Iraq memo Sarah Lyall , The New York TimesThe memo is just one of a number of sensitive documents whose contents have been illegally disclosed in Britain since the Iraq conflict began. In each case the documents, leaked anonymously by government employees opposed to the war, have revealed details of the inner workings of the British and American decision to go to war; some have also raised questions about the legality of the conflict and about Blair’s leverage, or lack of it, with Bush. The leaks have not been confined to Iraq-related matters but have also touched on the government’s investigations into the bombings in London last summer, and into the subsequent shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, a Brazilian electrician who was killed in the subway by police officers who mistook him for a terrorist...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Thursday, 13 July 2006 Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice. http://www.freearabvoice.orgA US helicopter crashed around midday Thursday southwest of Baghdad, US military forces admitted in a communiqué published Thursday afternoon. In a dispatch posted at 4:39pm Mecca time (1:39pm GMT) al-Jazeera satellite TV reported an American military communiqué as saying that an American Apache helicopter crashed as it hovered over areas to the southwest of occupied Baghdad in an area described as "a theater for many armed operations." Al-Jazeera reported that the American statement failed to explain why the helicopter crashed but claimed that the crew were "safe" and had been taken to a US military medical facility...

America's moral abyss Firas Al-AtraqchiIn early 2003, an Arabic-language newspaper ran a cartoon depicting the nation of Iraq as a young girl being raped by a US soldier while several Arabs in traditional garb enthusiastically egged the soldier on. The message was simple: Iraq was about to be plundered of its wealth, stripped of its manpower, its expertise, its middle and educated classes, its infrastructure and its knowledge base. Like a rape victim, the country would be scarred, mutilated and contorted, never again to appear fully sovereign. This vision became horrific reality in the town of Mahmoudiya in March 2006 when 16-year-old Abeer Qassem Hamza Al-Janabi was raped, shot and burned by a team of US soldiers who allegedly had been planning for a week to perpetrate their crime...

Ahmadinejad: “Fierce Response” if Israel Attacks Syria Kurt NimmoEarlier this afternoon, as a call in to Jack Blood’s GCN radio program, I asked Claire Brown of INN World Report how long she thought it would be before Israel attacked Syria. Brown said two days. I believe it may take a bit longer, although at this point it is speculation over what may be considered a fait accompli in advance—Israel will attack Syria. Two weeks ago, IAF jets performed a bit of sonic boom terrorism on Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, as he kicked back at his palace in the city of Latakia in northwestern Syria. "The IDF said the flyover, carried out by four planes flying in a low-altitude pattern, was a part of an overall IDF operation aimed at pressuring the Syrian leadership to expel Hamas Politburo chief Khaled Mashaal from Damascus," reported the neocon Jerusalem Post at the time. Maybe, but it is more likely the Israelis wanted to send a message to al-Assad that they can get him, no matter where he is...

Racism Plagues Western Media Coverage Ramzy BaroudRacism is "the belief that one 'racial group' is inferior to another and the practices of the dominant group to maintain the inferior position of the dominated group. Often defined as a combination of power, prejudice and discrimination." This is how the British Library defines racism on its Web site. The above definition hardly deviates from the essence of almost all definitions of the ominous concept. And, indeed, the concept is being fully utilized with Israel's onslaught against the Palestinians, and the international community and media's mild, if not accommodating response to the onslaught...

MWC Special Features, Israel A Totalitarian State Roger van ZwanenbergThe Israeli military invasion of Gaza brings to a head many of the issues that have been fermenting for many years. This invasion is the culmination of the Colonising of the peoples of the area begun in 1948. 1948 began the process of clearing the territory for Jewish immigration. This process has continued ever since. And inexorably, as the Palestinian people have resisted, so the levels of domination have increased. It is now clear that Israel’s Colonisation, is as a Totalitarian State. As the Palestinians refuse to go, to leave their homes and become Refugees, so the screws of domination have been tightened. The most recent bombings of power stations, attack the very foundation of modern urban life and threaten massive famine, cholera attacks and death from starvation, etc...

Sectarian rhetoric Ghazwan HadiThe predominantly Sunni Al-Adhamiya district, the predominantly Shia Al-Sadr City, the predominantly Sunni Al-Anbar province, the predominantly-Shia Missan district... this is how Iraqi locales are depicted every day in the media. Whether discussing security or politics, economy or services, the labelling is there for all to see and hear. If anything, such rhetoric tells the Shias to leave cities in which they are not a majority, and the Sunnis to do the same. This message, hideous as it is, is latent in the language of the media. The media may seem objective, informative, even hi-tech, yet its message can be as crude as it is tendentious. Still it broadcasts this same message day in, day out. What next? What happens once demography catches up with prophecy? What happens once the districts of Baghdad and other Iraqi cities turn into ethnically pure zones? Once the factional lines are drawn, do we have much hope of avoiding a sectarian war? Invisible hands are at work, inspiring the media, dictating its message...

What Are They Fighting For Prof. Tanya ReinhartWhatever may be the fate of the captive soldier Gilad Shalit, the Israeli army’s war in Gaza is not about him. As senior security analyst Alex Fishman widely reported, the army was preparing for an attack months earlier and was constantly pushing for it, with the goal of destroying the Hamas infrastructure and its government. The army initiated an escalation on 8 June when it assassinated Abu Samhadana, a senior appointee of the Hamas government, and intensified its shelling of civilians in the Gaza Strip. Governmental authorization for action on a larger scale was already given by 12 June, but it was postponed in the wake of the global reverberation caused by the killing of civilians in the air force bombing the next day...
