Atrocities...
Riverbend, Baghdad Burning
It promises to be a long summer. We're almost at the mid-way point, but it feels like the days are just crawling by. It's a combination of the heat, the flies, the hours upon hours of no electricity and the corpses which keep appearing everywhere. The day before yesterday was catastrophic. The day began with news of the killings in Jihad Quarter. According to people who live there, black-clad militiamen drove in mid-morning and opened fire on people in the streets and even in houses. They began pulling people off the street and checking their ID cards to see if they had Sunni names or Shia names and then the Sunnis were driven away and killed. Some were executed right there in the area. The media is playing it down and claiming 37 dead but the people in the area say the number is nearer 60. The horrific thing about the killings is that the area had been cut off for nearly two weeks by Ministry of Interior security forces and Americans...

THEN & NOW
Malcom Lagauche
More than three years have passed since the March 2003 invasion of Iraq by the U.S. According to U.S. predictions, by now Iraq should have been up-and-running with its infrastructure repaired and modernized and the oil spigots would be flowing at such a rate that Iraq would have paid for its own reconstruction and foreign entities would be raking in the cash from oil sales. Iraqi citizens would be living in a democracy and they would be awash with consumer items that they could only have dreamed about in the past. We now know that these were fairy tales. Unemployment in Iraq is over 50%. Electricity is available in Baghdad for about four hours a day. Safe drinking water is almost non-existent. People have been forced to sort through garbage to find food. The most powerful country on Earth, with billions of dollars to spend, has left Iraq in shambles. Many Iraqis are now calling the embargo years, "The Golden Years," compared to post-invasion Iraq...

Militarism and the Corporate Welfare State
Charles Sullivan
...According to author Antonia Juhasz, "Prior to the first Gulf War in 1991 and even after eight years of war with Iran, Iraq was ranked 15 out of 130 countries on the 1990 United Nations Human Development Index. Before the first Bush invasion, Iraq had the highest percentage of college-educated citizens in the Middle East and above average overall literacy rates. According to the World Health Organization, prior to 1991 health care reached approximately 97 percent of the urban population and 78 percent of rural residents, while the infant mortality rate was well below average for developing countries. " Constitutional government was established in Iraq in 1922. Prior to the 1991 U.S. invasion, Iraq was in essence a socialist government, since most of its political and economic infrastructure, including its burgeoning oil industry was nationalized...

The Presiding Judge of the First Trials Chamber
Subject: SUSPENSION OF ATTENDANCE

Al-basrah.net
The Defense Committee for President Saddam Hussein and Mr.Taha Yassin Ramadan, Mr.Barazan Ibrahim Hasan and Mr.Awwad Hamad Al-Bandar, would like to inform you that it has been decided to suspend its attendance in the Court's session as per July 10th, 2006 due to the violations to the rights of defense which amounted to the assassination of some defense lawyers. Those assassinations were instigated by various parties. Instigations to kill other lawyers are still going on in public. Moreover, the defense lawyers are prohibited from doing their best to do their sacred duty by presenting whatever legal arguments that they deem appropriate to defend their clients. We will not put an end to this suspension until the following demands are fulfilled: 1- To provide real and actual security for the defense lawyers and their families. Such protection should be provided by the American authorities. 2- To conduct significant investigations in the assassinations of martyr Khamis Obeidi and the other lawyers who were assassinated or wounded. Any possible results of such investigations should be made public...

Who TRULY is John Dimitri Negroponte?
Zack Krasuk, Al-basrah.net
... Once his mission at the UN was complete and the fake justification for war was bought by a lot of bullied nations, Negroponte was ambassador of the US for Iraq from June 2004 until april 2005. It is during this time period that sectarian violence increased exponentially to what we have today, an all out civil war. The paramilitary organization called Badr Brigade are the main perpetrators of such violence. This terrorist group is characterized by a decidedly pro-US stance and their practice includes kidnapping, torture and assassination of anyone that is an outspoken critic of the puppet Iraqui government or the US. Sunni Muslims, homosexuals and those who have criticized the occupation have also been victims of the Badr Brigade. "Curiously", the torture techniques used by the Badr Brigade have been the same as those used used by Batallion 316 in Honduras—this is known from the signs of torture found on the victims’ bodies. In January of 2005 the US began in Iraq an operation named "The El Salvador Option". Said operation was the training of "squads that would act in favor of US interests", as stated by US military public relations bureau. Members of such squads were chosen from fanatical elements of the Badr Brigade and the Kurdish Peshmerga (a group with strong ties to the Central Intelligence Agency)...

Routinization of Zionist violence against Palestinians.
The Angry Arab News Service
I came here to the US from UK, and already I saw a difference in the press coverage. Even the Financial Times had a scathing article against Israeli killings, as did Le Monde in a leading editorial. Here, the story is pushed to the back pages, and the New York Times had a picture today that was intended as humorous; and when editorials in even liberal pages mention Palestine, they always do so in the form of demands and expectations of the Palestinians. US media succeed in helping Israel turn its killing and occupation into routine, a daily routine: the brutal venture of occupation is now routinized...

Good news from Iraq
Roads to Iraq
For the first time an Iraqi official accuses the US and Israel, on creating the chaos in Iraq. Al-Mshahadani, head of the Iraqi parliament said: There are about 20 secret foreign "agencies" intervene in Iraq He pointed out that the first of these groups are the same group who wants toppled the state after the toppling of former regime and wanted Iraq to enter into darkness, creating a safe passage for the Israelis. [He means the US]. Al-Mshahadani also revealed the following: The existence of a hidden Israeli cell in Iraq, trying to infiltrate Iraqi political arena...

Aggression Under False Pretenses
By Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, Washington Post
As Americans commemorated their annual celebration of independence from colonial occupation, rejoicing in their democratic institutions, we Palestinians were yet again besieged by our occupiers, who destroy our roads and buildings, our power stations and water plants, and who attack our very means of civil administration. Our homes and government offices are shelled, our parliamentarians taken prisoner and threatened with prosecution. The current Gaza invasion is only the latest effort to destroy the results of fair and free elections held early this year...

CINDY SHEEHAN, HOWARD ZINN AND 40 INTERNATIONAL ACTIVISTS ASK OIL MAJORS TO BOYCOTT THE PENTAGON UNTIL U.S. FORCES LEAVE IRAQ
Charles Jenks, Traprock Peace Center
Twelve major suppliers of petroleum products to the Pentagon, including ExxonMobil, Shell, BP and Valero, have been asked by a group of peace organizations and activists, including Cindy Sheehan and Howard Zinn, to stop doing business with the U.S. military until all U.S. troops and mercenary forces are out of Iraq. ConsumersforPeace.org today sent letters calling for a Pentagon boycott by the following firms that comprised the top ten suppliers of petroleum and petroleum products to the U.S. military in fiscal year 2004 or 2005. This is a list of their total sales to the Pentagon for that period, based on information provided by the Defense Energy Support Center...

Revelations about the rape and murder of an Iraqi girl show...
How U.S. occupation breeds war crimes

Socialist Worker
...While some claim the U.S. must "stay the course" in Iraq to prevent a civil war, the truth is that it is the occupation that set the stage for this war by pitting Sunni against Shiite against Kurd. Whether it was "Mission Accomplished" or the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, every supposed "turning point" in the U.S. occupation has been followed by a lurch deeper into crisis and violence. Every day that the occupation continues only adds to the misery and suffering of ordinary Iraqis--and guarantees that more Hadithas and Abu Ghraibs and Al-Mahmudiyahs will take place. There is no future "right moment" to withdraw. The right moment for the U.S. military to get out of Iraq is now...

When Is a 14-Year-Old Girl a 'Woman'?
Sarah Weber
Ever since the case of the raping and killing of an Iraqi and the alleged murder of three of her family members by U.S. troops went public, the age of the rape victim had been in dispute, ranging from about 15 to 25. Two days ago, Reuters and others news agencies produced proof that she was 14, based on a passport and identity card. Most news organizations then started calling her a girl -- but some persist in referring to her as a "woman"...

Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Soldiers
Cindy Sheehan, t r u t h o u t
As of today, the War Department lists 2544 as the number of unjustly murdered troops in Iraq. Dozens of innocent Iraqis are being killed due to the war crime every day. Over 80 Iraqis were killed in Baghdad alone on July 9th: dozens of people just in one city on one day who would be alive if not for BushCo. I don't know what number Casey was. Nor do I care. I have seen people say 614, I have seen people say 714. It doesn't matter, because Casey and the other 2543 were not numbers. They were living, breathing, loving, worthwhile and contributing members of society. They could pass drug tests (unlike their "commander in chief" at their ages) and they honorably volunteered to serve their country to defend America and our freedoms. What George Bush and the rest of the careless war profiteers have committed in Iraq is abuse and misuse and had nothing to do with defending America or protecting our freedoms. The lies are well documented and proven. The lies are written on my heart forever...

Afghanistan: another occupation going off the rails.
Lenin's Tomb
...The recent military actions have killed scores of villagers, despite occupation claims that they targeted only 'Taliban' fighters. And while the US has engaged in war crimes and drafted war criminals into its puppet administration, the money sent as reconstruction aid has largely been spent on firms like Halliburton and on the erection of a modern mini-city for occupation bureacrats, NGOs and credulous reporters in Kabul (oooh, they've got the internet, wow). The police engage in routine corruption and brutality, such as the attempt to rape girls in school dormitories. As in Iraq, reporters largely take the word of the occupiers to account for their activities - we are told that bombs have killed 40 'suspected Taliban' in a 'secret hideout', for instance. Even Karzai has had to utter a word or two of meek criticism, noting that between 500 and 600 Afghanis had been killed over four weeks and that "Even if they are Taliban, they are sons of this land...

Israel’s Experiment in Human Despair
Jonathan Cook, www.dissidentvoice.org
...The destruction of Gaza’s power plant and loss of electricity to some 700,000 people; the consequent scarcity of water, build-up of sewage that cannot be disposed of, and inevitable spread of disease; the shortages of fuel and threats to the running of vital services such as hospitals; the sonic booms of Israeli aircraft that terrify Gaza’s children and unpredictable air strikes that terrify everyone; the inability of Palestinian officials to run bombed ministries and provide services; the constant threat of invasion by massed Israeli troops on the "border"; and the breakdown of law and order as Fatah and Hamas gunmen are encouraged to turn on each other. All these factors are designed to one end: the slow demand by Palestinians, civilians and militants alike, to clear out of the hell-hole of Gaza...

GI Special 4G11: Defending This Country - July 11, 2006 .
Thomas F. Barton
Andrew Sapp made up his mind last year while he was outside the Iraqi town of Baiji.
A staff sergeant with the Massachusetts Army National Guard, he had long opposed the war in Iraq, but not publicly.
Standing in a guard tower on Aug. 9, 2005, Sapp saw a flash in the sky.
"A moment later the ground shook. It really shook," Sapp, who lives in Billerica, told a group of about 75 summer session students at Phillips Academy last night.
Two roadside bombs had exploded nearby, Sapp said. The second, meant for a tank, hit an American Humvee. The gunner on the vehicle was thrown 50 feet but survived. Four others, members of the Pennsylvania National Guard, died.
"They had to pick pieces of them out of trees," Sapp told the high school-age students.
The stress of the memory was enough to drive feelings of intense anger through his mind and send Sapp into counseling.
"All I wanted to see was the town of Baiji leveled," he told the group. "I now understand, very well, how war crimes happen.""
