Her face Joseph Cannon, CannonfireThe United States now officially admits what we already knew: Abir Hamza, the victim of that vicious assault, was born in 1991. She was only 14 when a squad of all-American "Christian" good-old-boys killed her family, raped her, and burned her body. Not a single member of the unit shirked from this task. None of them felt guilty about what they had done to her (although they did regret the retaliatory measures against Americans) (...) The photo above, taken when Abir was but a toddler, is the only one we have at present... I hope every American sees this girl's face. Are our red-state Jesusmaniacs so blinded by their anti-Muslim bigotry -- so blinded by the lies told by our war-loving president and his propagandists -- that they cannot recognise the humanity and innocence in that little girl's eyes? This war has had many victims; let her face represent those we cannot see...

Israeli Blood-sport in Gaza Mike WhitneyQuestion: How many editorials or op-ed columns have appeared in American newspapers defending the rights of Palestinian civilians to live in peace without the constant threat of being invaded or shelled by the world’s forth largest military? None. How many editorials or op-ed columnists have defended the Geneva Conventions or international laws against collective punishment, the willful destruction of critical infrastructure, or military maneuvers that deliberately put civilians in imminent danger? None. Then how many editorials or op-ed columnists have presented the recent flurry of events (including the capture of Israeli soldier Galid Shalit) in the broader context of Israel’s ongoing boycott of food and medical supplies, as well as the 50 or so Palestinian civilians who have been killed in Israel’s regular incitements in the occupied territories? None...

Official Baath Party Statement on Sunday’s Shi‘i sectarian rampage in western Baghdad: “Keep your guns trained on the occupation and its stooges, don’t respond to sectarianism with sectarian logic!”
An official spokesman of the Iraqi Regional Culture and Information Bureau of the Arab Baath Socialist Party stated that the hideous crime committed by gangs loyal to Iran and with the encouragement and support of the US occupation forces is nothing but the latest chapter in the story of attempts to ignite a blind sectarian discord that will burn up everything and allow the occupation to turn the tables on the heads of the Iraqi people and stamp out their heroic Resistance The spokesman added that the Jaysh al-Mahdi [Mahdi Army], which is now the main tool being used by the American occupation and Iran, was the party that perpetrated this hideous crime (...) The Jaysh al-Mahdi is directly responsible for this crime, having been commissioned by Iran in accordance with the announced agreement with America on the partition of Iraq, parceling it out between them. This is a fact, not an allegation because thousands of Iraqi victims of this organization testify that this organization has transformed Saddam City into a frightful slaughter house in which hundreds of Iraqis are imprisoned and subjected to the most hideous types of deadly torture, after which their bodies are dumped in filthy water. The criminal murder of the martyred attorney Khamis al-'Ubaydi is one of the most vicious examples of this criminal behavior of the Jaysh al-Mahdi...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Monday, 10 July 2006 Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice.Iraqi President Saddam Husayn sent a hand-written message to the US-run show trial "court" expressing his refusal to attend its sittings. Below is our translation of the handwritten Arabic text of President Saddam Husayn’s letter as reproduced on the patriotic Iraqi albasrah.net website: In the Name of God, the Marciful, the Mercy-Giving. "Our Lord, do not let our hearts stray after You have guided us." [Qur’an, 3:8] To the President of the Special Higher Criminal "Court". In view of the fact that the court lacks the recognized legal measures that accord with Iraqi law and international law it seems as if there is an a priori malicious intention to judge us in accordance with the vicious desires of America, whose abased lackeys in Iraq answer to them under the influence of a well-known hatred and the notion that if they judge us for what they call crimes against humanity they will thereby keep us away from the politics and affairs of our country. You know and everyone knows that we did not become rulers of Iraq by means of American policy or money and we were not brought to the seat of authority on airplanes and tanks, but rather by our will and the will of our great people, and then by the will of our people based on their historic consciousness, determination, and desire expressed in successive referenda...

DAILY WAR NEWS FOR MONDAY, July 10, 2006 Today in Iraq...Clashes broke out between gunmen and Iraqi police in at least three neighborhoods across the capital, police and residents said. Three militiamen were killed in fighting with security forces in one of them, police said.Clashes broke out between Interior Ministry commandos and gunmen in the insurgent stronghold of Dora in southern Baghdad, leaving one commando dead and two wounded. Six militiamen lay dead on Dora bridge and seven were wounded after a shootout with residents defending the district. But another police official said the gunbattles involved militias on one side and the Iraqi police and army on the other. Five soldiers were wounded in the shooting, the source said. A car parked near a repair shop on the edge of the slum of Sadr City blew up, followed within minutes by a suicide car bomber who drove into the crowd that had gathered near the site. Hospital officials said at least eight people were killed and 41 wounded in the blast...

Zidane and the ‘war on terror’ Gabriele ZampariniYes, but why? Why did the 34 year old experienced football player who has just been awarded the Golden Ball as the best player at the World Cup do it? Guardian’s journalist Kevin McCarra wrote "there were suggestions last night that Materazzi had called him 'a terrorist’". Only Zidane and Materazzi know the truth and it would be interesting to know what they have to say about these "suggestions". If they are confirmed, Zidane’s gesture, far from being the "despicable, unfathomable act of violence" will be seen as the only link to reality of this World Cup. If these "suggestions" are confirmed, that red card will tell a completely different story. Still a "stupid reaction" according to the FIFA’s rules maybe, Zidane’s act will be remembered as the most human reaction to racism and hypocrisy (...) If Italian football player Materazzi really called Zidane 'a terrorist’, FIFA should strip Italy of the World Cup and leave the 2006 tournament without a winner. Whatever decision the FIFA will take, people could still make their voice heard by boycotting the Italian football team wherever and whenever will play...

More uncovered history of the Israel Lobby Xymphora...It is not an accident that the Likudniks are extreme right-wingers. People of Chomsky’s generation seem to have missed the radical change which has occurred in Israel in the last few years. In fact, many people saw the Kibbutzim movement as one of the best hopes for social anarchy in action. That hope is dead, and Israel’s turning right is the logical conclusion to a society based on expressly racist grounds, rising out of its reliance on ideas from 19th century ethnic nationalism. Why Israel can make this work, when all the successful countries in the world have turned away from this model, is a mystery...

From Abu Ghraib to Guantanamo Felicity Arbuthnot...On this 7th July, I wonder how long it would take ( and how many flowers laid) to read the names of the US and UK's victims where ever they are: thirteen years of illegal bombings of Iraq, unsanctioned by the UN. The child shepherds killed with their sheep, the possibly one and a half million silently killed by the embargo (the unborn, new born and under fives, the most vulnerable.) The victims of a radioactive wasteland poisoned by depleted uranium (nuclear waste) used in 'allied' bombs, bullets and missiles. The current unquantifiable dying - a July 7th daily in towns, villages and cities across Iraq. In Afghanistan no one counts any more, where are those names? The Balkans long forgotten, where are those? Every one a life, unique, who woke, anticipating a day, at work, at school, a trip to the market, a visit to friends. Planning a gift, an outfit, an evening treat. The 'only democratic country in the Middle East', US, UK ally Israel, slaughters Gaza as this is written 'targeting terrorists' as schools, homes, cars are bombed with abandon. Where are the names? Where are the screams of rage, the commitment and condemnation from world bodies? For all, how long the silence? How long the roll call of those whose life we have ended? How may flowers, how many wreaths, how many tears and rivers of blood? How many are asking where responsibility lies? It lies at Washington and Whitehall's doors, from King's Cross to Kabul, from Edgeware Road to the Euphrates...

CCR PUBLISHES FIRST REPORT ON TORTURE AT GUANTÁNAMO WITH DECLASSIFIED PRIMARY ACCOUNTS FROM CURRENT DETAINEES AND ATTORNEYS Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR)Today the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) published the first report citing declassified primary accounts from current detainees and their American attorneys to detail torture and inhumane treatment by U.S. officials at Guantánamo Bay prison. The "Report on Torture and Cruel, Inhuman, and Degrading Treatment of Prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba" is the most comprehensive primary source account ever published of ongoing abuse at the prison, detailing systematic physical, psychological, sexual, medical and religious abuse of detainees, filling 51 pages and 279 footnotes. The report is particularly significant in light of the Supreme Court’s recent Hamdan decision because it catalogues conduct by U.S. officials in violation of the Geneva Conventions, which the court applied to detainees, and analyzes the administration’s attempt to create a "legal black hole" for enemy combatants in sections discussing the administration’s liability concerns regarding conduct at the base Geneva, war crimes, and the forthcoming revisions to the Army Field Manual...

Israeli Savagery in Gaza George KarsaIt's ironic to witness the transformation of victims into the most brutal perpetrator of that which they suffered in the past. I am referring to what the Israeli government and its military forces are doing, in unprecedented savagery, against the defenseless Palestinians. With their recent incursion into Gaza (ostensibly to free a captured Israeli soldier), the random killing of innocent men, women and children, the destruction of the community's infra-structure (power plants, water treatment systems, hospitals, schools, roads, etc) and the imprisonment of democratically-elected government officials, are definitely war crimes and cry out for redress. Rarely have a people suffered under such brutality that they are denied the very essence of their humanity...

Good Idea: UN peacekeepers around US military bases in Iraq Roads to IraqSunni leaders are calling for UN peace keeping mission. Sunni politicians on Monday called on the U.N. Security Council to send peacekeepers to Iraq saying U.S.-led "occupation forces'’ cannot protect Iraqis. Which is true, and I want to add one more option to this plan: Place the peacekeeping troops around the "Green Zone" [the vampires cave] and around every American military base in Iraq, take it from me, there will be no more car explosions and suicide bombers as soon as this plan starts...

The Most Dangerous Name In Iraq APARISIM GHOSH, TimesOnLine...To the Shi'ite death squads responsible for many of the worst recent atrocities, no Sunni name incites more bile than Omar. (The original Omar was Islam's second Caliph and is reviled by Shi'ites who believe he worked against the interests of Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad.) More than a dozen Omars interviewed by Time say that when they produce identification cards bearing their name, they regularly endure harassment by Shi'ite policemen and government officials. Others have met a more gruesome fate. In a single incident last earlier this year, the bodies of 14 Omars were found in a Baghdad garbage dump. They had all been killed with a single bullet to the head, and their ID cards were placed carefully on their chests. It has, says Saleh Mutlak, a prominent Sunni politician, "become the most dangerous name in Iraq"...

Five more US soldiers charged in rape-murder atrocity in Iraq Kate Randall...What is particularly shocking and sickening about this incident, beyond its savagery, is its premeditated character. It cannot be attributed to an eruption of homicidal rage at the death of a comrade, or a disproportionately violent response to a real or perceived threat. Prosecutors contend that the perpetrators, who were manning a checkpoint through which the girl regularly passed, had singled her out in advance of the attack, and that they changed from their battle fatigues before setting out to rape her in her home. The girl’s mother, Fakhriya Taha Muhsen, was so worried about a possible attack by American soldiers that relatives suggested that the family come and live in an empty house near them. But before the move could be carried out, the soldiers came. There are many indications of a deliberate cover-up of the incident by American officers...

The pathetic cosmetics of the "Ugly American's" war crimes in Iraq Imad KhadduriIn an earlier posting, "the Ugly American is schizophrenic" on October 2, 2006, mention was accorded to a book written in 1958 by two Americans who coined the very apt term, "The Ugly American". The book, at that time, was renowned for its slashing exposé of American arrogance, incompetence, and corruption in Southeast Asia. Vietnam's bloody orgy proved the book's point of view a few years later as the American military bombed that country to near oblivion till the American's defeat in the seventies. Yet, having been mashed through the mental and moral Vietnam grinder, the American sheeple (sheep + people) were yet again led by the nose into decimating Iraq with their tax dollars after ingesting a heavy dose of government lies dished to them by the Corporate Media laxative. They readily excreted the wrenching Vietnam debacle from their conscious. As their own American Ugliness stared them, yet again from Iraq, straight in the face, they resorted to threadbare cosmetics, too little too late. Note the glaring contradictions/inconsistencies in these reports...

The fires of Baghdad Truth about IraqisJust a quick note to comment on the yesterday's violence in Baghdad. Forget what you read in the headlines. The attacks on predominantly Sunni areas are in response to recent purported news of US forces taking on the Mehdi militia. This is called flexing muscles. Muqtada Sadr who appealed for calm and said Iraqis should unite is behind the recent sectarian violence. Last week, after several Mehdi Army members were arrested by US and Iraqi forces, Sadr's parliamentarians demanded and received an audience with PM Maliki demanding their men be released. US forces have reported several operations against Mehdi Army hideouts in recent days. This is the backlash. Furthermore, just to clarify, Abu Diri', the Mehdi army militiman who hunts Sunnis for sport, has not been captured. But attempts to do so have lit a power keg....

Diplomatic Deception: The Calm Before the Firestorm Chris FloydDK at Talking Points Memo has this exactly right: the new mainstream media meme of a "quieter, more diplomatic" Bush foreign policy is yet another steaming crock served up by Karl Rove and swallowed whole by the fat and sassy gluttons of the press. As DK and Kevin Drum point out, the Bush Administration's whimpering reactions to provocations by North Korea, to the alarming resurgence of the Taliban (who have essentially trapped the British Expeditionary Force in the south in a loose but deadly siege), to the horrific death spiral in the raging Iraqi civil war, to the continuing imbroglio with Iran, etc., don't stem from some deliberate choice of "letting diplomacy work" but are simply the result of the Bushists' own blithering incompetence and utter cluelessness about how to actually govern a country and conduct a coherent foreign policy. But of course they don't care about governing, coherent policies, etc. What they care about are loot and dominion...

Saddam and key defence lawyers boycott Baghdad trial Mona Salem, AFP...In a letter to the tribunal's chief judge, Saddam said he boycotted Monday's proceedings in Baghdad because he did not recognise the legitimacy of the court which he charged was making a mockery of justice. "The tribunal is lacking in all precedures established by international and Iraqi law," said the letter, a copy of which was obtained by AFP. "For this reason, it seems there is a wish to condemn us for malicious American intentions." And Saddam's main defense lawyer, Khalil al-Dulaimi, said from Cairo that most of the defense team would also boycott the proceedings "until our demands are satisfied". He said the lawyers wanted protection for them and their families to be provided by a "neutral third party", and for their "right to defend to be respected". Key defence team member Khamis al-Obeidi was assassinated last month, the third defence lawyer to be killed since the start of the trial in October...

MEDIA ALERT: BLAMING THE VICTIM IN GAZA Media LensTraditionally, British media reporting of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been heavily biased in favour of the United States' major ally in the region, Israel. A 2002 Glasgow University Media Group report found that television broadcasters were six times as likely to present Israeli attacks as "retaliating" or in some way hitting back as Palestinian attacks. This caused many viewers to believe that the Palestinians were to blame for the conflict...

GI Special 4G10: "Are The Troops To Blame?" - July 10, 2006 Thomas F. Barton |
Why did they murder Philip Merrill? XymphoraWith the notable exception of Dick Cheney, the American ruling elites don’t shoot people in the head for pleasure, if only as they wish to avoid taking unnecessary risks. In particular, they don’t shoot those of their own kind, with one major exception. Like any organized crime group, they keep omerta, and punish those who breach the code of silence. The two classes of murders are those made to look like accidents, reserved for those who are going to be forced to testify, and the more ignominious group of murders made to look like suicides, reserved for those who it is feared will rely on their consciences and testify voluntarily (it is thus much more honorable to be 'suicided’ than to be 'accidented’)...
