Le Figaro on the Iraqi Resistance
LENIN'S TOMB
...1,300 Iraqi Resistance attacks in greater Baghdad alone in June. Secret American report shows US minimizing Resistance attacks, focusing attention on al-Qa'idah car bombings to divert attention from highly effective "complex attacks" by hard core Iraqi Army Resistance fighters. A secret American report has confirmed that the US occupation forces in Iraq are trying to hide the real strength of the Iraqi Resistance. The report, information from which has been acquired and published by the French newspaper le Figaro, discloses that there were 1,300 Resistance attacks in greater Baghdad alone in the single month of June 2006...

The “Reconciliation” Sham
Mike Whitney
Is "reconciliation" possible with the men who raped your daughters, poisoned your water, looted your museums, leveled your cities, bombed your holy sites, tortured and killed your friends and neighbors, and toppled your government? George Bush seems to think so; that’s why he’s pushing the plan through his Baghdad stooge, Prime Minister Nuir al-Maliki. But, I would offer this one word of caution to the "war president": Don’t bet on it. There have been numerous communiqués from the Iraqi resistance on the internet, but they can all be reduced to one simple 2-word message: "Get out"...

Baghdad Sectarian Violence Kills 50 Sunnis
IslamOnline.net
Roving bands of masked gunmen went on a rampage Sunday, July 9, in a predominantly Sunni Baghdad neighborhood, killing at least 50 Sunni Arabs in a gruesome sectarian attack (...) Firas Shimmari, a security guard, received a call from his brother who reported that the gunmen were checking people's IDs and attacking them if they indicated the person was Sunni...The finger of accusation was pointed at militias loyal to Shiite leader Moqtada Al-Sadr and Shiites-dominated police, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP). "I blame the Mehdi Army militiamen for this killing — it is all in the open now," said Sheikh Abdel Samad Al-Obeidi, imam of the Fakhri Shanshal mosque in the neighborhood, which was bombed on Friday killing two (...) A senior Shiite politician said Mehdi Army fighters from eastern Baghdad had moved into Jihad on Sunday but insisted they were only taking on Sunnis responsible for killing Shiites. "There are many terrorist groups in Jihad who are killing Shiite families so they went to fight them," added Sudani, a follower of Sadr...

Who kidnapped 50 people in Al-Salhyia
Roads to Iraq
...Now, can anybody tell me how can the kidnappers go there with 6 minibuses, abducting people randomly from the street and leave the area without being noticed? Nobody asked them where are you going?, who are you?, nobody managed to contact the police? Unless the kidnappers are the Iraqi police themselves or a dark "Salvadorian Militia" working for the Americans creating the chaos. The one, who wants to kidnap innocent Iraqis, is the same one who kill innocent Iraqis handcuffed and the same one who don’t mind raping Iraqis just for fun...

Filmmaker Sues U.S. Over Iraq Detention
Cyrus Kar's civil case is said to be the first to test the legality of Pentagon policies on detainees.

Henry Weinstein, LATimes Staff Writer
A Los Angeles filmmaker who was imprisoned in Iraq for 55 days sued Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and other high-ranking military officials Friday, alleging that his detention violated his civil rights, the law of nations and the Geneva Convention. Mark D. Rosenbaum, legal director of the ACLU of Southern California, said the suit is the first civil action challenging the constitutionality of the U.S. government's detention and hearing policies in Iraq. Cyrus Kar, 45, of Los Feliz was freed a year ago, just days after the American Civil Liberties Union sued seeking his release. The new lawsuit, filed in federal court in Los Angeles, seeks damages for Kar and broad changes in the government's detention policies. "The abuses experienced by Mr. Kar — prolonged arbitrary detention without charge, the systematic denial of access to counsel, and the absence of any court in which to challenge the legality of his detention — are the norm for thousands of persons held in U.S. military detention in Iraq," the suit asserts, citing reports by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Amnesty International...

IRAQ: Insecurity, under-funding threaten children's health in Basra
IRIN
NGOs devoted to health issues in southern Iraq say that dozens of children have died of relatively common diseases since January due to a lack of medicine. "There are no official statistics about the number of children who have died in Basra since January," said Hassan Abdullah, a senior official in the Basra governorate. "But local health department employees and volunteers from some NGOs have collected information suggesting that about 90 children have died as result of the lack of medicine." According to Abdullah, this is worse than the same period last year, when some 40 children died for similar reasons...

Iraq The Model For Plagiarism
Bush Out
"A daily intelligence brief on Iraq, prepared by a private contractor for the U.S. military and companies working in Iraq, paints a grim picture of life in Baghdad. The daily report for July 7 documents a slew of sectarian attacks and car bombings around the capital and says that "the levels of torture and execution-style killings…illustrate the increasing disregard for human life by the perpetrators for those not of their own grouping." But the report, marked "for official use only," also goes on to describe Baghdad as a city without spirit — in a long passage lifted straight from a popular Iraqi blog called Iraq the Model. (...) So are US contractors lifting stories from ITM, or are the boys at ITM picking up a few extra bucks working for US contractors, and getting lazy at it? Either way, this is a clear case of plagiarism. Iraq The Model used to be wildly pro-US, but reality has set in. The comments are still full of the same rabid nut-jobs, but the blog is now trying to present itself as an alternative news source. Let's not forget that these ITM boys once travelled to the White House to meet with Bush and Wolfowitz, who frequently cited ITM as a recommended source for US journalists...

How to win a fight (Part I)
Mickey Z.
Learning how to fight is not the same as promoting belligerent, anti-social behavior. We live in an exceedingly violent society. Our films, books, TV shows, and video games glorify mayhem and carnage. Our leaders (sic) solve most of their problems through aggression...or the threat thereof. While talk of non-violence is understandable and the struggle for peace has never been more essential, let's face it: The odds are that sooner or later you're going to end up in a confrontation that may escalate into physical violence. So, why not be prepared?...

Bloodbath in Gaza: Israeli War Crimes Continue with Impunity
A Statement By the Palestinian National Initiative

Israel’s bloody re-occupation of the Gaza Strip entered its 10th day on Saturday. In the 4-day period between Wednesday 5th and Saturday 9th July alone, a total of 46 Palestinians have been killed in a series of Israeli aerial, artillery and ground attacks, predominantly in the Beit Lahiya and Atatra areas of the Gaza Strip where 44 people have been killed. A further 2 Palestinians were killed during an Israeli military incursion into Jenin and Nablus last Thursday and Friday. One of those killed in the attacks on Gaza was 20-year-old Shadi Omar, a disabled man suffering from a hearing and speech impairment. Another man had been handcuffed and blindfolded before being executed through a shot to the head at close range...
