Showing respect for that notorious Democratic Process wanted by his principals "Maliki stressed that if Iraqi President Jalal Talabani refused to sign the death sentence, his two deputies will do the job". This is the so-called Iraqi government (sic!) that according to the UN and major Western human rights NGOs should investigate on the kidnapping, torture and brutal killing of three Saddam Hussein’s lawyers and provide security to the survivors in Saddam Hussein’s defence team...

North Korea and the vanishing American Empire
Mike WhitneyDoes Kim Jung Il read the newspapers? If Kim thumbed through today’s news he would have seen the limp and bloodied body of a dead Palestinian boy being rushed away from the site of Israel’s latest attack in Gaza. He would have read about the mysterious explosions that rocked Kabul overnight and the 30 or so "alleged" Taliban that were blown up in America’s scattershot carpet-bombing of southern Afghanistan. He would have seen that 24 new bodies of bound and brutalized Iraqis had been dumped at the Baghdad morgue after being abducted and tortured by the roaming death squads which control the capital. He might have spotted a story about America’s continued involvement in Central Asia where the thirst for oil and natural gas has Bush’s NGOs toppling governments behind the pretext of "spreading democracy". Or, he may have noticed an article which recounted Bush’s latest saber-rattling at Iran for their "alleged" nuclear weapons program. Wherever he looked, he would have found examples of the United States and Israel rampaging through Muslim countries; ignoring international law and flaunting the human rights of the native people. Doesn’t this explain why Kim believes that he needs the protection of a nuclear arsenal to ward off an American attack?. How can we expect North Korea to stop building nukes when 2 of the world’s most powerful nations have just doused the planet with gasoline and are reaching for the matches? Like every other world leader, Kim simply wants to avoid ending up like Saddam Hussein...

They've been, on a global basis, involved in this conflict. And it will continue - whether we complete the job or not in Iraq - only it'll get worse. Iraq will become a safe haven for terrorists. They'll use it in order to launch attacks against our friends and allies in that part of the world." Lovely to watch how people like Cheney, and the minions who support his ilk, conveniently forget that there was no terrorism in Iraq prior to the US invasion/occupation. And one must love his "logic." For according to Cheney, "whether we complete the job or not in Iraq" his beloved "terrorism" will "continue" ... "only it'll get worse." Then why stay in Iraq, Dick? Because when Dick said, "only it'll get worse," if he'd been referring to the situation on the ground in Iraq, he'd have been 100% accurate. For starters, things for the US military continue to disintegrate...

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported Shaykh Ahmad Kamal as saying that some of the bodies were still lying in the streets at that moment. In a bulletin posted at 3:55pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported from western Baghdad’s al-Jihad district that Shi'i sectarian gunmen had begun to retreat towards the al-Furat neighborhood after suffering a number of dead and wounded in their assault on the predominantly Sunni district. 6 U.S. Soldiers Now Charged In Iraq Rape, Murder Probe
APMore American soldiers are being charged in connection with the alleged rape and slaying of a young Iraqi woman. The U.S. military confirmed Saturday that it is charging four active-duty troops with murder and rape. The same charges are already pending against a former soldier, Steven D. Green, who was arrested last month in North Carolina. Green has pleaded not guilty. There is also a sixth American who was hit with dereliction of duty charges. According to the military, he didn't take part in the attack but knew what happened and failed to report it...

KLTV TexasGunmen roaming a Baghdad neighborhood on Sunday killed at least 40 unarmed Iraqis as soon as they identified them as Sunnis, emergency police said. Ala'a Makki, a spokesman for the Iraqi Islamic Party -- Iraq's main Sunni political movement -- said the victims included women and children. He called the killings in Hay al Jihad "one of the biggest massacres of Sunnis." Gunmen -- mostly "young reckless teenagers" -- started to pick up Sunni youth and execute them in public, while others went door-to-door looking for Sunni families who stayed behind, Makki said. Watada, the War, and the Law

Ehren Watada, an infantry officer stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, who has refused to deploy to Iraq with his unit because he believes the war there is illegal. Watada faces up to eight years in jail and a dishonorable discharge. But in trying the 28-year-old officer, the Army is really putting itself, the Iraq War and the Bush Administration on trial. At the June 7 press conference announcing his decision, Watada argued that the Administration's invasion and occupation of Iraq was "manifestly illegal" because it "violates our democratic system of checks and balances. It usurps international treaties and conventions that by virtue of the Constitution become American law. Watada also said, "As the order to take part in an illegal act is ultimately unlawful as well, I must as an officer of honor and integrity refuse that order." ...

Urgent: government takes legal action against Craig Murray.

These documents clarify and support many of the claims in the book about the government's use of intelligence gained through torture, and also reveal the extent to which the Foreign Office sought to censor the book. The government maintains that even if these documents were released under the Freedom of Information Act, they remain the copyright of the Crown and may not be published. Consequently (it has been pointed out to me), there will be no jury trial. What is most likely, it seems, is a fine for infringement of copyright and imprisonment for non-payment...

Afghanistan Is No One's War

Following 9/11, the Taleban government said it would extradite Osama bin Laden if the U.S. could produce evidence against him. This is the approach taken by the courts of every Western country when extradition is requested. The U.S. either could not or would not produce any evidence, yet it insisted the Taleban was behaving in bad faith and harboring criminals. To this day, the public has not been given one genuine piece of evidence that ties bin Laden to 9/11. I’m not saying he’s innocent, only that there was no proof at the time Bush used him as an excuse to invade Afghanistan. Bin Laden certainly did not like the United States, but was he in any way responsible for a great crime?...

The remaining five were bodies of puppet "Iraqi Interior Ministry Shock Troops (Maghawir)" who had been killed. The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a Health Department doctor in the Central Statistical Department for Health in Baghdad as saying that the five bodies of puppet "Shock Troops" were found in the predominantly Sunni al-'Amiriyah neighborhood. The 51 bodies of Sunnis ranged in age from 18 to 60. The youngest were school and university students, who worshipped in the Baghdad districts of ash-Shu'lah, al-Kazimiyah, at-Tubji, as-Sadr, Baghdad al-Jadidah, and as-Saddah.
