Home Free: American Power in Mahmudiyah
Chris Floyd
Did you see her and want her so bad, that young, forbidden fruit? Did she once smile nervously at the checkpoint, and you thought it was just for you? Did you come on strong the next time around, flash a little money maybe, or lay a syrupy line on her that you got from a phrasebook? What did she do – recoil? Look away? Look disgusted? Look blank? What did she do to bring on the big hurt from a big, tough man like you? So you planned it all out. You cased the house, you reconnoitred. You got your buddies in on it – or were they in from the start, did they make a play too, were they too turned away by this haughty Arab bitch, this piece of trash from a shitheap town in a shitheap country filled with nothing but lazy, lying, murdering towelheads? Somebody like that thinks they're too good to give it up to you? You liberated her goddamned country, for Christ's sake, and now she won't even put out? That dog won't hunt. Hell no. You and your pals had to teach her a lesson. You had the power, you had the guns, you were Americans; who was going to stop you? So you set up the mission. You knew how to do it. How many houses had you raided before? Dozens, hundreds – who the hell knows? Who the hell cares? You went in and got her, you did what you wanted to her...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Sunday, 2 July 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice. http://www.freearabvoice.org
In a dispatch posted at 7pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that at that moment Shi'i sectarians were shelling the predominantly Sunni al-A'zamiyah district of Baghdad with mortars and Katyusha rockets. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in al-A'zamiyah reported that several mortar shells had landed in houses of local civilian residents, in the royal cemetery, and the historic cathedral Mosque of Abu Hanifah an-Nu'man. Meanwhile, the correspondent reported that at that time, dozens of Shi'i sectarian militia had surrounded then al-A'zamiyah district were apparently preparing for an assault on the heavily populated area (...) In a dispatch posted at 8:35pm Makkah time Sunday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier Shi'i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi militiamen fired four heavy 120mm mortar rounds at residential houses in the predominantly Sunni al-A'zamiyah district of Baghdad. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported from al-A'zamiyah that Iraqi puppet army forces, who had recently been supplied American Humvees, together with Shi'i sectarian militia were firing rockets at the predominantly Sunni district at that moment. In a dispatch posted at 8:50pm Makkah time Sunday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier one of the rockets being fired by Shi'i sectarian militias and puppet army forces had killed a family in the al-A'zamiyah district...

Orwell in Iraq: Snow Jobs, Zarqawi and Bogus Peace Plans
Dahr Jamail , t r u t h o u t
... The vague plan offered by the Shia-dominated puppet government was flawed from the beginning, and when I asked Napoleoni what she thought of the "plan" she said, "I don't think it is going to work at all. I think it is a window dressing for the West. I think it is one of these political decisions in order to sell an image to the West saying, "Oh, the new government in Iraq is actually offering peace. But this peace is going to be rejected; therefore the new government has no other choice but to continue repressing the people." She continued, "I don't think there was anything in that proposal that was written in order to bring a deal. Because if you look at this, it is impossible for any of those groups to accept it. It's too vague, for a start. Also, it basically prohibits amnesty for anybody who has done any activity motivated by political violence. So of course this was rejected because there was no way an amnesty is going to be accepted by the Sunni when we are in a situation where the government is in the hands of the Shia."...

Cockroaches of the world unite!
William Bowles, I'n'I
There can be no clearer example of the inherently racist nature of Western 'civilisation’ than the events of the past week. And if anyone doubt the power of language to shape our perception of events let them look no further than the alleged exemplar of 'objective’ reporting, the BBC and its treatment of the genocidal policies of the state of Israel. Elsewhere, other writers have highlighted the actual language used to reduce the actions of the Palestinians to those of some kind of sub-human not worthy of consideration. No doubt there are some who feel so embarrassed by the latest actions of the Zionist state that they will protest, and sections of the 'liberal’ media will bleat but do little else. By next week, it will be last week's 'news'. What's the deaths of a few more non-people in the Western scheme of things?...

Preteen mag accused of military pitching
AP
Parents and teachers are complaining that the latest issue of a popular magazine for preteens amounts to little more than an early recruitment pitch for the Army. Cobblestone magazine, which is put out by Carus Publishing in Peterborough, is aimed at children ages 9-14 and is distributed nationwide to schools and libraries. Its latest issue features a cover photo of a soldier in
Iraq clutching a machine gun and articles on what it's like to go through boot camp, a rundown of the Army's "awesome arsenal" and a detailed description of Army career opportunities...

US-led offensive in southern Afghanistan kills hundreds
Jake Skeers, WSWS
...The Pentagon is using its overwhelming firepower in an attempt to destroy enemy strongholds and establish its own bases through the region. In the last three months, it has conducted 340 air strikes against targets in Afghanistan, as compared to 160 in Iraq over the same period. The full weight of the US airforce, from B-52 bombers to small Predator drones, has been used. Despite US claims that the operation is only targeting Taliban fighters, it is clear that ordinary villagers face bombings and hostile attacks. The Pentagon routinely describes all victims of military operations as Taliban, even if they turn out to be women and children. According to a report in the Canadian newspaper, La Presse, Canadian troops in Afghanistan are involved in the systematic intimidation of villagers...

The Real Meaning of the Hamdan Ruling
Supreme Court: Bush Administration Has Committed War Crimes

DAVE LINDORFF
Largely missed in all the coverage of the Supreme Court's landmark ruling in the Hamdan v. Rumsfeld case was the establishment by the court majority that all Bush administration claims to the contrary, the Geneva Convention rules regarding captured prisoners apply to the captives taken not only in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but in the so-called War on Terror. What has been largely missed is the clear point that the Supreme Court has now declared that for the past five years, Bush and his gang of war-mongers, including Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State and former National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, former Attorney General Donald Rumsfeld and current Attorney General and former White House Chief Counsel Alberto Gonzales, and many others in the administration, have been guilty of violating the Third Convention on treatment of prisoners of war...

Slain Iraqi girl feared soldiers
MOM TOLD NEIGHBOR AMERICANS HAD MADE UNWELCOME ADVANCES

Ellen Knickmeyer, Washington Post
Fifteen-year-old Abeer Qasim Hamza was afraid, her mother confided to a neighbor. The pretty girl had attracted the unwelcome attention of U.S. soldiers working at a checkpoint that she had to pass through almost daily in their village in the south-central city of Al-Mahmudiyah, her mother told the neighbor. Abeer told her mother again and again in her last days that the soldiers had made advances toward her, a neighbor, Omar Janabi, said over the weekend, recounting a conversation he said he had with the girl's mother, Fakhriyah, on March 10. Fakhriyah feared the Americans might come for her daughter at night, at their home. She asked her neighbor if Abeer might sleep at his house, with the women there. Janabi said he agreed. Then, ``I tried to reassure her, remove some of her fear,'' Janabi said. ``I told her, the Americans would not do such a thing.'' Abeer did not live to take up shelter at Janabi's home...

GI Special 4G3: Zombie Soldiers - July 3, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
The pentagon informed the press today of their latest program that will solve the military man power problem for good. They told reporters this morning that the first all undead infantry unit has already had great success in the combat zone.
"This platoon of walking dead was created using soldiers that have already been killed in Iraq using a sophisticated combination of scientific machines and voodoo magic." claimed the program designer and mad scientist Dr. Cheney.
The Dark Necromancer Rumsfeld said that the zombies were nearly indestructible, can operate on no sleep and have few personal hygiene concerns. When pressed if they could be killed by removing their heads Rummy stated that it was "a classified voodoo secret."
Cheney wanted to make it clear that suicide or death in combat would no longer be the easy way out of military service.

Corporate Media Ignores War Against Palestinians
Kurt Nimmo
In a brazen attempt to sugar coat Israel’s flagrant violations of the Geneva Convention, specifically Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which is intended to protect civilians, the corporate media continues to spin the situation in the Gaza Strip. "Israel Steps Up Raids in Bid to Free Soldier," headlines the New York Times, reporting that "Israeli aircraft intensified their attacks on Palestinian targets in Gaza." In fact, the Israelis are inflicting relentless collective punishment on the Palestinians, as B’Tselem, the Israeli human rights organization, documents...

Ramsey Clark: Impossible to prepare a defense for Hussein
CNN
BLITZER: There's talk that Saddam Hussein is thinking of making a political comeback, talking to some of his other attorneys. Is that at all realistic in his mind? CLARK: I don't think he has any thoughts of a political comeback. I've never heard him say anything about it or seen any indication of it. The thing that he always says and is always clear is that he's torn apart by what he sees happening to his country, to the people of Iraq. And the thing he says above all is Iraqis should never kill Iraqis...

Iraq: Basra residents call for human rights recognition
IRIN
Residents of Basra, some 550km south of the capital, are calling for recognition of their human rights following a series of allegations of abusive treatment by local police. This follows the announcement by the central government in Baghdad that security in the south of the country was improving (...) "Local police are treating residents badly by using their power without limits." Haydary says police are particularly brutal at check points and during home raids, lashing out at anyone that challenges their right to do so. This has been collaborated by Ali Jalil, a local resident, who said: "Just because I told them [police] that they do not have the right to search my home without an official letter from the Ministry of Interior, they hit me and my son and forced my wife and daughter out of our house." Jalil went on to claim that he was arrested without any evidence, was tortured for three days in prison and then was dropped some 30km from his home with a stern warning to never disobey the police again...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Saturday, 1 July 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice. http://www.freearabvoice.org
...In a dispatch posted at 11:33am Makkah time Saturday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a mysterious car bomb exploded in a popular market in the predominantly Shi'i Madinat ath-Thawrah area of eastern Baghdad on Saturday morning. The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses who live in Madinat ath-Thawrah (which has been dubbed "Madinat as-Sadr" by many of the local Shi'ah) as saying that the explosives-laden car was parked by the side of the main road in the popular market when it exploded, killing 60 civilians and wounding 114 more of them. The Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq, the highest Sunni Muslim religious authority in occupied Iraq, issued a statement on Saturday condemning the mysterious bombing and holding the US occupation and its puppet regime responsible. The Association statement denounced the "sinful hands" that took the "innocent lives of those who had committed no crime and inflicted no wrong in accordance with a sinister plan aimed at destroying the unity of the Iraqi people and sowing sectarian and ethnic strife among the components of the one Iraqi people"...

LAST STAND
The military’s problem with the President’s Iran policy.

SEYMOUR M. HERSH
On May 31st, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced what appeared to be a major change in U.S. foreign policy. The Bush Administration, she said, would be willing to join Russia, China, and its European allies in direct talks with Iran about its nuclear program. There was a condition, however: the negotiations would not begin until, as the President put it in a June 19th speech at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, "the Iranian regime fully and verifiably suspends its uranium enrichment and reprocessing activities." Iran, which has insisted on its right to enrich uranium, was being asked to concede the main point of the negotiations before they started. The question was whether the Administration expected the Iranians to agree, or was laying the diplomatic groundwork for future military action...

Abducted Sunni legislator sought
Kim Gamel, The Associated Press
Bombs struck markets north and south of Baghdad today, with nationwide attacks killing at least 12 people and wounding dozens, and parliament convened despite a boycott by Sunni Arab legislators protesting a colleague's abduction. A member of the Iraqi Accordance Front, the largest Sunni bloc in the 275-member legislature, suggested that Tayseer al-Mashhadani was kidnapped by Shiite militias and said the legislative boycott would continue until she is released. Noureddine al-Hyali said the political group had information that al-Mashhadani was being held somewhere near eastern Baghdad's Ur neighborhood -- a predominantly Shiite area that is controlled by radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi army militia (...) A U.S. Marine was killed in combat in the volatile western Anbar province, the military said. It also said a roadside bomb killed an American soldier Sunday during a combat patrol north of the capital...

WE ALMOST PULLED IT OFF
Malcom Lagauche
Originally, I ran this article one year ago today. The last article I posted (#441) dealt with the death of my close friend, Tiger Khan, at age 33. He plays a part in today’s article. I am devoting this article to his memory. If things had gone as planned, he would have played the most notorious part of his wrestling career: that of Col. Nizar Hussein, Saddam Hussein’s nephew, in Baghdad in 2002. Tiger had the courage and integrity to want to travel to Iraq during the embargo and try to help the Iraqi people...

GIs May Have Planned Iraq Rape, Slayings
RYAN LENZ
Investigators believe a group of U.S. soldiers suspected of raping an Iraqi woman, then killing her and three members of her family plotted the attack for nearly a week, a U.S. military official said Saturday. Up to five soldiers are being investigated in the March killings, the fifth pending case involving alleged slayings of Iraqi civilians by U.S. troops. The Americans entered the Sunni Arab's family home, separated three males from the woman, raped her and burned her body using a flammable liquid in a cover-up attempt, a military official close to the investigation said. The three males were also slain...
