Israel’s Infrastructure Warfare
Mike Whitney
Israel is now openly engaged in infrastructure warfare, the wanton destruction of the basic platforms of human survival. The bombing of the electric power plant has thrust the world’s most densely populated area into darkness; cutting off the vital flow of energy to hospitals, assistance centers, and the pumping stations which provide the city’s water. At the same time, Israel has bombed large sections of the main roads, government buildings, water lines and bridges. The Associated Press said, "Israeli tanks and bulldozers crossed the Gaza Strip and began razing farmland east of Khan Younis"...

Iraq’s ‘unity’ government inaugurated in blood
U.S. massacres in Iraq reveal reality of occupation

Caneisha Mills
...A report issued by the Department of Defense on May 30 suggests that an end to the resistance is not in the foreseeable future. The report, "Measuring Stability and Security in Iraq," indicates that resistance activities in fact increased 13 percent between February and April of this year. "Enemy elements remain resilient," the report states. The "unity" government identifies its main three goals as "[fighting] the insurgency, [restoring] stability and [setting] the stage for the eventual withdrawal of U.S. and other foreign troops." These statements reflect the wishes of the U.S. government. They in no way represent the vast majority of Iraqi people’s desire for the immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces. The new government is another U.S. attempt to "Iraqize" the occupation, replacing the symbols of overt colonialism with a pro-U.S. political establishment and military force with an Iraqi face...

DAILY WAR NEWS FOR SUNDAY, July 2, 2006
Today in Iraq
Sgt. Bryan C. Luckey, 25, of Tampa, Fla., died on June 29, in Mosul, Iraq, when he was shot by enemy forces while on mounted patrol. Luckey was assigned to the 562nd Engineer Company, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska. At least 66 people have been killed by a car bomb in a busy Baghdad market in a Shiite neighbourhood Saturday, despite a massive security crackdown in the Iraqi capital. A US military vehicle which attempted to approach the blast scene withdrew in a hail of stones thrown by angry residents (...) The largest Sunni Arab bloc in parliament said it was suspending its participation in the legislature until a kidnapped colleague was released, dealing a blow to efforts to involve the disaffected minority in the political process...

Crisis 2006: When Pariah States Cry Wolf
Remi Kanazi
It’s lights out in the Gaza Strip and lights out in the moral consciousness of the Western and Arab world. The reason? One soldier, who lacked the ethical fiber to resist involvement in the illegal occupation of an indigenous people, was captured by those he was oppressing. It’s like a rapist complaining when his victims get aggressive. Red flags have gone up throughout the West. This event is an "escalation," a "declaration of war," an "obscene act by terrorists." Is this capture ten thousands times less offensive and harmful than the ten thousand prisoners abducted by Israel? Would not the executing of four thousands Palestinians, the vast majority of them civilians, constitute a "crime against humanity?" ...

Disgusting Israelis Prepare Genocide
Kurt Nimmo
..."Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told his Cabinet that the military had been ordered to 'do all it can’ to return the captured 19-year-old corporal, and cautioned that arrests of senior Hamas officials could spread to Gaza, the Islamic militant group’s power base, a government official close to the prime minister said," reports ABC News International. In other words, Olmert has informed us a whole lot of innocent Palestinians will die soon and the democratically elected government of Palestine will be decimated. "Defense Minister Amir Peretz told the Cabinet meeting that Israel would go after 'higher-caliber targets’ in the future a reference to senior Hamas officials inside and outside the Palestinian territories, a high-ranking political official said." Translation: Syria can expect to be invaded, or at least have Israeli assassins kill "higher-caliber" people elected to represent the Palestinians...

Declaration on the legal necessity to halt the proceedings against POW President Saddam Hussain.
The BRussells Tribunal
...The 1945 Nuremberg Charter states clearly: "To initiate a war of aggression ..is not only an international crime, it is the supreme international crime, differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." The UN Charter and its Definition of Aggression (GA Res. 3314) reinforce this rule. Since the invasion under the Nuremberg and UN Charters was utterly illegal, all that followed from it is illegal, from Mr. Bremer's laws to the new constitution to the trial of Mr. Hussain. For the reasons set out above, the current judicial proceedings against Mr. Hussain should be halted. The provisions of Geneva Convention III relating to Protecting Powers and POWs should be implemented regarding Mr. Hussain and all similarly situated persons of the government in place at the time of the invasion of Iraq who are detained in Iraq. All persons involved with the proceedings must be fully protected. To all those who respect international legality: Please raise your voice against the constant breaking of international rules governing Mr. Saddam Hussain's trial....

Geneva Conventions are "Quaint" and "Obsolete"
Sadist, Torturer, and Murderer...

William Fisher
The Formica report reviewed only three allegations of abuse by special operations forces, but found that Iraqi detainees were held for up to seven days at a time with their eyes taped shut in tiny box-like cells so small that they had to sit with their knees to their chests while loud music blared, and detainees were fed only bread and water for up to a week. One of the detainees said he was kept inside his tiny cell for two days, another for five days, and the third for seven days. The one kept for seven days alleged, " before he was placed in the box his clothes were cut off. He said that while held in the box, his captors duct-taped his mouth and nose, making it hard for him to breath." He charged that water was thrown on him, that he was beaten, kicked and electrocuted. Formica concluded that overall conditions "did not comport with the spirit of the principles set forth in the Geneva Conventions," but dismissed allegations that prisoners were physically abused or humiliated. The general recommended no disciplinary action against any U.S. special operations personnel....

I just woke up from a terrible dream
ArkBuilders.org
...Unfortunately, countless hundreds of thousands of people in our world right now today cannot wake up from their nightmare of depleted uranium poisoning, brought to you by the United States Government "War on WMD's" and "War on Terror" and "War for no-bid Contracts". Racial hatred as the real essence of Israel
Xymphora
The one lesson the Palestinians will take from the latest Israeli outrages is that the real Israeli weakness is a hypersensitivity to having its citizens captured and controlled by Palestinian militias. The weakness flows directly from Israeli racism: it is simply intolerable for any member of the real Master Race to be under the control, even for one moment, of the untermenschen. This racism underlies everything that the Israelis do, and has reached a point which can only be described as pathological...

Oil and deceit
Xymphora
This comment from trouvere refers me to this amazing column by David Frum, in which he concludes that it is morally acceptable for Jews to engage in lies and deceit in order to protect Israel. I have no problem with that, but in the current context in the United States, where there is some debate whether agents for Israel deceived the United States into entering a disastrous war in Iraq entirely to further right-wing Israeli goals, and where further deceit by the same people is trying to force the Americans into an even more disastrous war for Israel against Iran, the timing of the public expression of Frum’s phony ethical scruples is simply bizarre...

Lana Habash - Morning Came
peacepalestine
The following is a letter from Palestine. Please forward widely. Morning came and we found that 90 of the nation's best men were captured by Israel from their homes in the night. Our mayor, who was released from four years in prison just a month ago. Someone for whom I have the utmost respect and admiration, as do his people here, political allies and opponents alike. And our vice mayor, too. The last time I talked with him, earlier this week, he was struggling a lot with chronic back pain. I wonder where they are now. If they have been fed today, or tortured. If they will sleep on beds tonight, or not at all. If they will be home tomorrow. If we will never see some of them again alive...

A new low (?) for the Washington Post
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
When it comes to the corporate media, it's difficult to declare a "new low" since there's so much competition for the title, but I'll nominate this one, anyway. In an editorial today, the Washington Post supports/approves/justifies/excuses (you pick your word) the latest Israel attacks on the Palestinian people. That in itself isn't in the slightest surprising, and if that was the sum total of it, I wouldn't waste the electrons commenting on it. No, what aroused my fingers to action was this, which was part of a list of allegedly "mild" and "restrained" actions taken by the Israelis: Israel has disrupted power supplies for slightly more than a tenth of Gaza's population. Every single news report, including the Post's own news story on the strike, asserted that the power plant which was destroyed supplied power to half the people of Gaza, not one-tenth. It isn't enough for the Post to support the Israelis, they have to lie to do it...

GI Special 4G2: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY - July 2, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
The hole in the ceiling is just a way to let out steam for the soldiers showering inside a damaged trailer in Ramadi, one of Iraq's most dangerous cities.
But each knows how that hole was created. A mortar round came through the trailer roof a few weeks ago and could have killed everyone inside had it detonated. Most mortars are not so benign, and there are many here.
The Iraq war for most troops is fleeting; brief ambushes or sudden, powerful roadside bombings. But in this troubled city, the capital of deadly Anbar province, the conflict is nearly constant.
Gunbattles in the streets are common and mortars rain down on the bases every week.
(...)

UNFIT TO LEAD THE WORLD
Walter C. Uhler
Appropriately, much has been made of the recent survey conducted by Foreign Policy and the Center for American Progress, which found that 84 percent (of the more than 100) of America's top foreign policy experts believed that the United States is not winning the war on terror. Not only do they dispute President Bush's insular and politically self-serving assertion that America is winning that war, they also "see a national security apparatus in disrepair and a government that is failing to protect the public from the next attack." [See "The Terrorism Index," July/August 2006] "Disrepair" is an understatement...

GUEST MEDIA ALERT: KIDNAPPED BY ISRAEL
The British Media And The Invasion Of Gaza

Jonathan Cook, Media Lens
Few readers of a British newspaper would have noticed the story. In the Observer of 25 June, it merited a mere paragraph hidden in the "World in brief" section, revealing that the previous day a team of Israeli commandos had entered the Gaza Strip to "detain" two Palestinians Israel claims are members of Hamas. The significance of the mission was alluded to in a final phrase describing this as "the first arrest raid in the territory since Israel pulled out of the area a year ago". More precisely, it was the first time the Israeli army had re-entered the Gaza Strip, directly violating Palestinian control of the territory, since it supposedly left in August last year...

U.S. Troops Rape, Butcher Iraqi Family:
Later, Iraqis Behead Two From Same Platoon;
U.S. Soldier Confesses And Under Arrest
The official told the AP the accused soldiers were from the same platoon as the two slain soldiers. The military has said one and possibly both of the slain soldiers were tortured and beheaded.
The official said the mutilation of the slain soldiers stirred feelings of guilt and led at least one of them to reveal the rape-slaying on June 22.

High Court Has Found Bush Guilty of War Crimes
This Can't Be Happening!
Largely missed in all the coverage of the Supreme Court's landmark ruling in the Hamdan v. Rumsfeld case was the establishment by the court majority that all Bush administration claims to the contrary, the Geneva Convention rules regarding captured prisoners apply to the captives taken not only in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but in the so-called War on Terror. What has been largely missed is the clear point that the Supreme Court has thus now declared that for the past five years, Bush and his gang of war-mongers, including Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State and former National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, former Attorney General Donald Rumsfeld and current Attorney General and former White House Chief Counsel Alberto Gonzales, and many others in the administration, have been guilty of violating the Third Convention on treatment of prisoners of war. They are also, therefore, in violation of federal law, which back in 1996 adopted that convention as part of the U.S. criminal code...

What's to Stop Him?
Bush's Assaults on Freedom

PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
On June 29 the US Supreme Court in a 5-3 decision ruled that President Bush's effort to railroad tortured Guantanamo Bay detainees in kangaroo courts "violates both US law and the Geneva Conventions." Better late than never, but it sure took a long time for the checks and balances to call a halt to the illegal and unconstitutional behavior of the executive. The Legal Times quotes David Remes, a partner in the law firm of Covington & Burling: "At the broadest level, the Court has rejected the basic legal theory of the Bush administration since 9/11--that the president has the inherent power to do whatever he wants in the name of fighting terrorism without accountability to Congress or the courts." Perhaps the Court's ruling has more far reaching implications. In finding Bush in violation of the Geneva Conventions, the ruling may have created a prima facie case for charges to be filed against Bush as a war criminal. Many readers have concluded that Bush assumed the war criminal's mantle when he illegally invaded Iraq under false pretenses. The US itself established the Nuremberg standard that it is a war crime to launch a war of aggression. This was the charge that the chief US prosecutor brought against German leaders at the Nuremberg trials...

DAILY WAR NEWS FOR SATURDAY, July 1, 2006
Today in Iraq
A car bomb tore through a market in a poor Shi'ite district of Baghdad on Saturday, killing 62 people and wounding 114 in the bloodiest attack in Iraq for three months. Police said the market bomb went off in mid-morning as a police patrol was passing a parked car in a market area of the capital's eastern Sadr City district, a stronghold of the Mehdi Army militia of Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. A roadside bomb struck an Iraqi police commando patrol in central Baghdad, killing three commando members. Four bodies were found around Baghdad.
