Iraq between genocide and coincidences
Gabriele Zamparini, The cat's dream
You could not make it up! Just a few days after Iraq Body Count’s numbers have lost any credibility (1) the Los Angeles Times published "War's Iraqi Death Toll Tops 50,000" (...) Stephen Soldz wrote an important comment on this: Further, the fact that mortality estimates come from government sources raises questions as to the accuracy of attributed causes. After all, attributing deaths to "terrorist attacks" is more acceptable to the powers-that-be than is attributing tem to "American forces" or to pro-government militias and death squads...

Iraq: Shia resistance? Says who?
Truth About Iraqis
In recent months, dozens of videos produced by Shia resistance fighters have emerged, dispelling the notion that this is a Sunni fight alone. Here is one. Excerpted lyrics: "I am Shia, I am Iraqi, I am Arab." From the Imam Kathem resistance group (...) Why did I post this video? For purposes of instruction only, to show those who rely to heavily on western media for their news that there stories and events they are simply not told about leading to their distorted view of affairs in Iraq. And to further show that the resistance in Iraq is not Sunni alone...

Gunmen attacked a convoy assigned to Iraq's most senior Sunni Arab politician Monday, killing one bodyguard. Adnan al-Dulaimi, head of the Iraq Accordance Front, was not in any of the vehicles. The Iraq Vichy
John St. John
There is an interesting historical parallel between the Nazi occupation of France and the American occupation of Iraq. The Vichy government was installed by an occupation just as the Iraq government was. Hitler did not call for any elections in France because at that time election fraud had not become a science. Unlike Hitler: Bush who had stolen two elections in the United States did not fear the electoral process. The Iraqis who turned out to vote did not even know who they were voting for. The Vichy government in France initiated a civil war just as the faux Iraq government has...

Democracy In Iraq
iraqi screen
...It was a breaking news, " Saddam defense lawyer, Khamies Al-Ubaidi is killed." (...) She said I am Khamis wife." We were at home, Khamis was in his bed, when more than 15 armed man stormed our house at 7 am, wearing civil uniform and grabbed Khamis from his bed. I asked them who are you? They told me "we are the security of the Ministry of Interior." They did not let him say a word but they turned to me and said " We warn you and any member of his family to go to the forensic department and take his body, all of you will be killed." All I want now is to take Khamis body and leave with my three kids. Khamis body later on found in Sader city, tortured severely, an eye witness from the city itself said " Khamis body was on the ground, any one passes by give it a bullet among shouts of condemnation for any person defends Saddam." "Democracy wanted to kill all the Americans who brought her to this country before it would kill herself as she is watching all the atrocities committed in Iraq under her name." A lawyer commented on Khamis killing...

The Security Situation in Iraq
A Citizen Of Mosul
No body can believe what is going on in Iraq those days. 100 workers kidnapped together during their way home after they finished their work, next day at the same place and the same time and from the same company 150 workers kidnapped !!! (...) Other strange thing that a General Director in the Ministry of Health kidnapped inside the Ministry building!!, isn't that suspicious? (...) Three years of occupation and despite the daily statements of the US official about the progress in the security, the condition progress from bad to worse.
Every day is worse than the previous. Can any body imagine how the US super power together with the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi police and the allied forces from so many sources are all failed to control the chaos in this country. This country was controlled in peace and security by the power of single Dictator. Don't believe that this dictator killed people in his 35 years of control more than what was killed in 3 years of freedom and democracy under the US controls...

Israel is The Mother of Terrorism in The Middle East
Dr. Elias Akleh*
...Israel’s state terrorism has the advantage of being condoned by US & EU governments and ignored and distorted by all mainstream media, while Palestinian self-defense, resistance to Israel’s illegal occupation, and any retaliation to Israeli terror attacks are exaggerated and condemned as "terrorism". All Israeli crimes, including assassinations, targeting children, razing farm land, robbing Palestinian land to build their own colonies, house demolitions, and indiscriminate air bombing of civilian communities with American made F16 and bombs are described as self-defense and war against terror, while Palestinians are portrayed as cold blooded suicide bomber, baby killers, ruthless terrorists. With all its military might Israel is portrayed as the victims of the rudimentary Palestinian rockets that, so far, had killed nobody. Palestinian victims, the majority of which are children and women, are described as armed terrorists who are determined to wipe Israelis off the face of earth. The big myth about the Zionist Israeli state is that it is a democracy. The truth of the matter is that Israel is a theocratic terroracracy driven by dangerous apocalyptic religious beliefs of "god’s chosen people in god’s promised land"...

The latest on "Iraqi" deaths
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
...And there's another group completely omitted by the Times, which, despite referring to "Iraqi deaths" in their headline, refers to "deaths by violence" in the body of the article. This completely omits deaths caused by lack of health care, malnutrition, and other such causes which have increased since the war. When it comes to Darfur, both the American media and the U.S. government are quick to talk about "excess deaths" and people killed by "disease and famine" (as well as violence). But when it comes to Iraq, the Johns Hopkins/Lancet study which estimated excess deaths in Iraq at 100,000 more than a year ago is universally (in the corporate media and elsewhere) pooh-poohed. The number of Iraqi killed violently by the war is well over 100,000, and the number of Iraqi dead as a result of the war, including "excess deaths," quite possibly approaches 200,000...

Neocons Accuse “Liberal” New York Times of Treason
Kurt Nimmo
Michelle Malkin, neocon blogger and concentration camp advocate, has posted a spate of converted WWII posters on her site, taking the New York Times to task for reporting the news, albeit a year late. According to Malkin and New York representative Peter King, the New York Times stands accused of treason "for reporting last week about a secret financial-monitoring program used to trace alleged terrorists" and disclosing "a secret domestic wiretapping program," according to CBC News, never mind both programs violate the spirit and the letter of the Constitution. "No one elected The New York Times to do anything," King told the New York Daily News. "They’re breaking the law to satisfy their own arrogant, liberal agenda."...

The Not So Strange Case of Philip Merrill
Joe Quinn , Signs of the Times
...Philip Merrill presided over all of this as President of the Ex-Im Bank of America from 2003-2005, and while a political 'high-flyer', he still held to a quaint notion that journalists should have integrity - a dangerous mix if there ever was one. How much he knew of what was, and is, happening to Iraq's wealth and its people is hard to know. What we do know is that, now that he is dead, he can't write one of his "fiery editorials" about U.S. government and Wall Street "manipulations". But all of this is irrelevant, and we shouldn't waste time on "crazy conspiracy theories" about his death - the mainstream media has spoken: he shot himself in the head with a shotgun and then tied an anchor to his feet and jumped off his yacht into the cold Chesapeake bay. There's nothing to see here...

American Rituals
Massacres, Baseball and Apple Pie

DON SANTINA
The recent revelations of the horrors of Haditha (six months after the atrocity--way to go, in-bed media!) have produced the same eerie wall of silence from the politicians and pundits that we witnessed during the unmasking of the Abu Graib torture chambers. Plus some murmurs about a few "bad apples" spoiling the system. So, we can probably anticipate another Abu Graib type resolution of the problem wherein some grunts and noncoms do jail time and an expendable officer gets demoted...

FBI Exploits Mentally Ill in “Homegrown” Terrorism Effort
Kurt Nimmo
It is now an established pattern: the government seeks out mental cases and disturbed individuals and turns them into "al-Qaeda" terrorists, or wannabe al-Qaedaites. Narseal Batiste, "the accused ringleader of a wacky terrorist cell" in Miami, as the New York Daily News puts it, "needs psychiatric help," according to his father, Narcisse Batiste. "He was distraught after his beloved mother, Audrey, died in 2000, relatives told The News, and the next year he left Chicago and dropped out of sight." From all accounts, Narseal Batiste is not an over-the-top mental case like Zacarias Moussaoui, but it appears he is vulnerable enough to be exploited by the government, determined to fabricate "homegrown" terrorists...

Reconciliation
iraqi screen
Maliki was declaring his reconciliation project in the Iraqi parliament amid a blown up security plan began ten days ago, Mahdi army supported by the commandos of the ministry of Interior was busy launching attacks against Sunni dominated neighborhoods in Baghdad like Fadhel, Haifa street and Al-Kifaha. They tried to enter Adhamiyia but the National Guards stopped their progress to avert a big fight as people there are always in state of alert expecting Shiite militias to come at any moment. A man from Adhamiyia said " I do not leave Adhamiyia because my ID is issued in Adhamiyia and if Shiite militia discovered that they will kill me." He went on to say "you did not hear of the ten guys who went from Adhamiyia to the Medical City to donate blood but they kidnapped by militias there, their bodies found later on at the outskirts of Baghdad"...

Resistance in the US Military to the War on Iraq
Ann Wright, t r u t h o u t
... Despite the "yes, sir" attitude of senior military officers toward the Bush administration's illegal policies, there is resistance within the US military to the war on Iraq. Military personnel know they have the right and duty to refuse illegal orders, including the order to deploy to an illegal war. They know the United States executed German and Japanese military officers and civilians for their participation in wars of aggression in World War II. They know that the Nuremberg principles adopted by the international community after World War II require civilians and military personnel to stop their government from committing illegal acts. Those in the military who dissent and resist what they know are illegal actions of the Bush administration are persons of the highest courage and conscience...

Los Angeles Times estimates Iraqi dead at 50,000
Stephen Soldz
The Los Angeles Times has a new study estimating Iraqi deaths at 50,000, but also acknowledge the existence of a serious undercount. [War’s Iraqi Death Toll Tops 50,000] Unlike Iraq Body Count, which goes to great lengths to distract attention from the gaps in its coverage, the LS Times article emphasizes the weaknesses in its estimates and makes it clear that many more have died (...) There have been several accounts since the occupation began of United States and "Iraqi government" officials ordering the counting of civilian casualties to stop. The United States took the extraordinary and illegal step of occupying the main hospital in Fallujah, and of barring press access to the city for many weeks after its destruction in November, 2004. Presumably, one reason for these actions was to hide the extent of civilian deaths.

Maliki’s Reconciliation initiative, born dead
Roads to Iraq
Maliki’s initiative for dialogue and national reconciliation included many positive points such as the disarming militias, stop torture and the release of detainees, but it is not expected to achieve any results in terms of halting security deterioration because the plan was born dead and 11 resistance armed groups already rejected it: Maliki closed all the doors of reconciliation by making a conditional amnesty, Maliki don’t want to negotiate with: Baathi members, Saddam’s supporters, people who killed Iraqis and later he added people who killed American-led forces. In fact, the people Maliki wants to talk reconciliation with, are already in the current political process, they participated in the last election and even have a ministry in the new government...

GI Special 4F22: Afghanistan Up Close And Personal - June 26, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
KABUL: Southern Afghanistan will see "significant fighting" for several months as coalition troops push ahead with a major offensive to crush a resurgent Taliban force, the U.S. military said Wednesday.
"People should expect significant fighting in certain areas of the south over the coming months," Col. [Tom] Collins said during a press briefing in the capital, Kabul.
"That's the whole purpose of Mountain Thrust ... to go into the area where the government doesn't have a presence right now and take the threat out of those areas," he said.
The militants have been maintaining pressure on coalition forces with suicide attacks and ambushes.
"We are seeing the enemy operating in larger groups. They are fighting hard. They are clearly trying to stop our efforts to move into certain areas," he said.

Three Iraq Myths That Won't Quit
Scott Ritter
...Imagine the president of the United States flying to Russia, China, England, France or just about any other nation on the planet, landing at an airport on supposedly sovereign territory, being driven under heavy U.S. military protection to the U.S. Embassy, and then with some five minutes notification, summoning the highest elected official of that nation to the U.S. Embassy for a meeting. It would never happen, unless of course the nation in question is Iraq, where Iraqi sovereignty continues to be hyped as a reality when in fact it is as fictitious as any fairy tale ever penned by the Brothers Grimm. For all of the talk of a free Iraq, the fact is Iraq remains very much an occupied nation where the United States (and its ever decreasing "coalition of the willing") gets to call all the shots...

Sunnis, Shi'ites find fault with Iraq peace plan
Reuters
Iraq's most senior Sunni Arab politician, Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, complained that the plan set no withdrawal date for U.S. occupying forces. He also said Shi'ite Islamist Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was wrong to rule out peace negotiations with hardline followers of Sunni former leader Saddam Hussein. "Leaving the issue of a timetable (for U.S. withdrawal) vague," Hashemi told Reuters, "is telling the resistance: 'continue your fighting to liberate Iraq'." (...) In another camp, an aide to fiery Shi'ite cleric and militia leader Moqtada al-Sadr said the 24-point plan presented to parliament on Sunday did not go far enough to punish Saddam's Baathist supporters. Sahib al-Amery told reporters in Najaf that Sadr's movement, accused by Sunnis of attacks on them, welcomed the plan but said its proposals to soften measures barring Baathists from office must be scrapped in favor of tougher sanctions on them...
