The threat of Depleted Uranium exposure: real, deadly ... and covered up by the Pentagon and United States Veterans Administration Stephen Lendman, VHeadline.comThe Pentagon must surely believe the old, but very foolish, saying that what you don't know won't hurt you. To prove it they nearly always go to great lengths to conceal what they do know so we won't find out. That's especially true when what they know is bad news or hazardous to our health or that of our troops. That's certainly the case regarding the real and deadly threat from exposure to the toxic effects of depleted uranium (DU) poisoning. The public has precious little information about this crucial issue because it's been willfully and deliberately suppressed to conceal just how potentially great and irreversible a threat it is...

Vladimir Putin and the rise of the petro-ruble Mike WhitneyRussia is planning a preemptive strike on the United States that is likely to trigger a market meltdown and economic disaster in America. On May 10, in his State of the Nation speech to parliament, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would make the ruble "internationally convertible" so that it could be used in oil and natural gas transactions. Currently, oil is denominated exclusively in dollars. Putin’s announcement is tantamount to a declaration of war (...) The US is assuming its traditional antagonistic role towards Russia by putting more military bases in Central Asia, feeding the turmoil in Chechnya, isolating Russia from its European neighbors, and directly intervening in its elections. When the G-8 summit takes place next week, we should expect a full-throated attack from the corporate media disparaging Putin as the latest incarnation of Adolph Hitler. (It should also be noted that Putin’s announcement of converting the oil trade to rubles has not appeared in ANY western media. Like the Downing Street Memo, the firebombing of Falluja, or the "rigged" 2004 elections, the western media scrupulously avoids any topic that may shed light on the real workings of the US government) ...

Explosive Video US Army Soldier: “It’s like mass genocide on us, you know. Our country has become terrorist. That’s why people hate us.” Kim Petersen, www.dissidentvoice.orgAn extraordinarily candid video co-produced by Seattle’s Pepperspray Productions and Peacefilms Vancouver should chill the hearts of concerned Americans and peace-loving people everywhere (...) According to Macbeth, there was complete disregard for the Geneva Conventions, which the army brass calls this "political crap." In the US military, morality is damned. Macbeth, however, out of his great shame found the courage to speak out and confess to his atrocities and the atrocities committed by comrades in Iraq. The atrocities were made easier by dehumanizing the Iraqis. Says Macbeth, "I felt disgusted, you know, with myself because I had to make myself hate them in order to do my job. I had to make myself, had to make myself not think of them as people" ...

Scream!!!!! Anwaar HussainWatch this twenty minutes video. Hear this confession from a former killer who got tired of killing after his humanity finally woke up in him. This is what so many of us have been shouting from the rooftops for so long now. Watch it and then decide you want to whimper, cry or scream, but watch it you must. Watch and cry over the American slaughter of innocent human beings. Watch and cry over dead mothers holding dead children clinging to their bloodied bosoms. Try imagining their final moments in their death throes if your tears are not welling up. Watch and cry over innocent children whose brains were scattered by American rifles from close quarters. Imagine your own if you don’t have tears for the Iraqi children. Watch and cry for it is each one of you Americans who have so far paid US $3,330 per household to ensure the smooth going of this genocide. Watch and decide whether you want to continue to pay for this slaughter...

Afghans' uranium levels spark alert Alex Kirby, BBCA small sample of Afghan civilians have shown "astonishing" levels of uranium in their urine, an independent scientist says. He said they had the same symptoms as some veterans of the 1991 Gulf war. But he found no trace of the depleted uranium (DU) some scientists believe is implicated in Gulf War syndrome. Other researchers suggest new types of radioactive weapons may have been used in Afghanistan...

Judge targets me because I'm Shi'a - lawyer Independent OnlineColleagues feel it's because she's a woman, but Bushra al-Khalil, the lawyer thrown out of Saddam Hussein's trial Monday, said she believes the chief judge is targeting her because she's a Shi'a Muslim defending the former Iraqi leader (...) "There is a decision to distance me because I come from a well-known Shi'a family," she said. Al-Khalil is a member of a wealthy southern Lebanese family from the village of Jwaya. Her maternal grand father, Youssef al-Faqih, led the country's Shiites until the 1950s, and an uncle was a grand ayatollah, the highest rank a Shiite cleric can reach. But for al-Khalil, Arab nationalism outweighs sectarian ties. "Saddam Hussein is not a sectarian person and it can't be true that he targeted Shi'as for being Shi'as," she said. "The Dujail case was not against Shiites but against people who tried to assassinate the president"...

Uproar in court as judge ejects Saddam lawyer Ahmed Rasheed, Reuters...One man, speaking openly without the protection of a screen used by many other witnesses, praised Bandar's running of the Revolutionary Court that sentenced 148 Shi'ite men to death over an assassination attempt on Saddam at Dujail in 1982. "Did I ever kick any defence lawyer out of court?" Bandar asked his witness, a former court employee, making ironic capital of the earlier scenes of uproar. "No. You never did," witness Murshid Mohammed Jasim said, turning to the judge to add: "He always gave the lawyers time to speak and was never angry with them, whatever they did." He also said the charge that Bandar ordered 32 Dujail youths under 18 to be executed in defiance of Iraqi law was untrue...

Gonzales: An Obligation to Prosecute Journos Kurt NimmoIf AG Gonzales was indeed serious about prosecuting journalists and others for "publishing classified information," he would go after people in the Bush administration, haul them before grand juries, build cases, file charges, and throw them in the hoosegow. "We have an obligation to enforce those laws. We have an obligation to ensure that our national security is protected," said the AG. For instance, Dick Cheney. In 2003, as the invasion of Iraq was underway, Cheney authorized Scooter Libby "to disclose classified information to journalists to defend the Bush administration’s use of prewar intelligence in making the case to go to war with Iraq, according to attorneys familiar with the matter, and to court records"...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Sunday, 21 May 2006 Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice....Mafkarat al-Islam noted that Iraqi Resistance Groups and other Iraqi organizations had confirmed that the US occupation was involved in setting off car bombs targeting Iraqi civilians in an attempt to smear the image of the Iraqi Resistance and incite sectarian violence as Washington pursues a course of splitting Iraq along sectarian and ethnic lines. Ibrahim ash-Shamari, a spokesman for the Islamic Army in Iraq, one of the prominent Resistance groups told al-Jazeera satellite TV in March that "there is information showing that many of the car bombings are the work of the American occupation attempting to sully the reputation of the Resistance to try to get the Iraqi people to repudiate it"...

NGOs Demand UN Security Council to Review Violations of International Law in Iraq & Crimes committed by US-UK Forces NGO Letter to the UN Security Council on Iraq...In numerous detention centers and prisons, MNF forces have subjected prisoners to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, identified by human rights authorities as abuse and torture. MNF guards and interrogators have subjected Iraqi detainees to an array of physical and psychological mistreatment, including severe and prolonged beating, hooding, submersion in water, forced nudity, sexual abuse, sleep deprivation, suffocation, electric shocks, threat by dogs, and other forms of humiliation and prolonged exposure. The cases of torture in Abu Ghraib prison are well-known to the whole world. In spite of MNF claims that such practices have now ceased, highly-credible sources suggest that illegal treatment continues...

Khalilzad AP Interview Sarah MeyerAP: "Do you feel that the new government will have a honeymoon, or will it be immediately faced with challenges?" KHALILZAD: "I think it will be faced immediately with challenges because the terrorists are not going to go away, they're going to persist in their effort to promote a sectarian conflict. They want Iraq to fail, but Iraq in itself is not important for them. Iraq is one theater in a global war; that they want to provoke a war of civilization." One only needs to make a small addition to this statement for it to make sense. "I think it will be faced immediately with challenges because the" US/UK "terrorists are not going to go away, they're going to persist in their effort to promote a sectarian conflict...

The Anti-Empire Report Some things you need to know before the world ends William Blum...During my years of writing and speaking about the harm and injustice inflicted upon the world by unending United States interventions, I've often been met with resentment from those who accuse me of chronicling only the negative side of US foreign policy and ignoring the many positive sides. When I ask the person to give me some examples of what s/he thinks show the virtuous face of America's dealings with the world in modern times, one of the things almost always mentioned is The Marshall Plan. This is explained in words along the lines of: "After World War II, we unselfishly built up Europe economically, including our wartime enemies, and allowed them to compete with us." Even those today who are very cynical about US foreign policy, who are quick to question the White House's motives in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere, have no problem in swallowing this picture of an altruistic America of the period of 1948-1952...

GI Special 4E21: An Honorable Soldier - May 21, 2006 Thomas F. Barton...As I exited the Staten Island Ferry recently for an antiwar demonstration of 300,000 people down Broadway, a young man next to me noticed my VETERANS FOR PEACE T-shirt. "What war?" he asked. "Vietnam." "Thanks for your service," he said. "The war never should have happened," I told him. "It’s not something to thank me for." "Thanks, anyway," he said as we parted. As a veteran, you get "Thanks for your service" a lot. It always irritates me. I never quite know how to respond because I’m not proud of my service in Vietnam, and don’t feel I should be thanked for it...

The Guardian sweetens up Colonel Tim Spicer William BowlesAn article in today's (20/5/06) Guardian, 'The Enforcer', does a disinfectant job on the mercenary Colonel Tim Spicer that is as outrageous a piece of propaganda on behalf of the illegal occupiers of Iraq as you are likely to read. The article completely airbrushes out Spicer's illegal activities in Sierra Leone on behalf of Blair's government as it does the connections Spicer has to the mercenary armies that have slaughtered their way across Africa in pursuit of gold, diamonds and of course, oil. Back in August of 2004, I wrote a piece on Spicer that is worth reprinting again, not only because it reveals just what kind of person Spicer really is but it also shows how privatising war and the predations of capital as it plunders the natural resources of poor countries, go hand in hand...

The "Deal Government" Fiasco and Iraq's Future Sabah Ali, BRussells Tribunal...Maliky did thank – in his inauguration speech - the (Shiite) religious great references, as he called them, especially Sistani. He promised to defeat terrorism and violence (as we defeated the tyranny, he said) He did not mention any thing about the hundreds of thousands of the occupation troops, the armed militias, the resistance, or the 14 American permanent military bases in Iraq. Actually, he promised to work in cooperation with the "coalition" troops until it is realistically convenient for them to "go back to their countries"(He did not say to leave Iraq). It is important to remember, at this point, that the UN Security Council "mandate" for the occupation troops in Iraq ended by the end of 2005. Apart from ex-prime minister Jafari's "invitation", they do not have any "legal" cover to stay. This fiasco is very useful for them to say that they are staying as far as the Iraqis are not ready yet to run the country, which is well on the threshold of civil war. The Iraqi first government relishes full American guardianship...

Murtha on Iraq: ‘There’s Not Only No Progress, It’s Worse Than It Was Prewar’ Think ProgressThis morning, Jack Murtha appeared on CBS’ The Early Show to talk about the Iraq war. Murtha offered a sobering assessment: [T]here’s not only no progress, it’s worse than it was prewar. this thing has been mishandled so badly. The American people needed to hear. we’re spending $450 billion on this war by the end of the year, $9 billion a month, and so we need to change course. The facts appear to back Murtha up. Here’s a summary of key indicators, drawn from the Brookings Institute’s Iraq Index, using the most recent data available...

Fruit of the Poison Tree Charles SullivanMillions of citizens are rightly calling for the impeachment of George W. Bush due to his criminal and unethical policies. Bush is a cancer not only on the presidency but upon basic human decency. Any sane person, regardless how marginal they are, can see that Bush must go and the sooner the better. However, when Bush is gone the system that produced him will remain in place, as healthy and viable as ever. It will continue to bear a plentiful crop of poison fruit, perhaps even more sinister than Bush. The majority of the people are toiling under the illusion that the moral abyss of American politics can be reformed and made to serve the people as well as the public interest...

Zionist rain of death on Sudan XymphoraThe Israeli and worldwide Zionist movement doesn't like the current government in Sudan. Sudan is one of the 'periphery' states of non-Arab Muslims, like Turkey and Iran, particularly targeted by Israeli geopolitical theoreticians, but has a government that is too strongly Islamist for Zionist tastes. Israel has in fact been accused of providing arms to rebels against the central government. The current campaign to attack Sudan under the guise of protecting the people of Darfur is another manifestation of Zionist attempts to create 'regime change' in Sudan...
