Condoleezza Pregnant: Giving Birth to Monster
Laura Knight-Jadczyk , Signs of the Times
Condoleezza Rice has described the plight of Lebanon as a part of the "birth pangs of a new Middle East" and said that Israel should ignore calls for a ceasefire. "This is a different Middle East. It's a new Middle East. It's hard, We're going through a very violent time," the US secretary of state said. "A ceasefire would be a false promise if it simply returns us to the status quo. "Such a step would allow terrorists to launch attacks at the time and terms of their choosing and to threaten innocent people, Arab and Israeli, throughout the region." I have to say that, as the mother of five children, these remarks stopped me cold in my tracks. Aside from the obvious question "what can Condoleezza Rice - a woman who has never given birth - know about "birth pangs"? - there is another more compelling question: what kind of human being can be so callous as to say such a thing when tens of thousands of mothers in the Middle East have suffered the unimaginable grief of seeing their beautiful babies crushed under the jackboots of rapacious Imperialism and religious fanaticism?...

Die with Love, version 2.0!
Sabbah's blog
We all condemn the parents of the kids signing the Israeli bombs "with love" falling on Lebanese civilians and innocents, but we didn’t see the parents while doing the same. Worse, here are matured Jewish men signing bombs, again...

Not only Fox News
Gabriele Zamparini
According to the latest Harris Poll published on July 21 "Despite being widely reported in the media [sic!] that the U.S. and other countries have not found any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, surprisingly; more U.S. adults (50%) think that Iraq had such weapons when the U.S. invaded Iraq. This is an increase from 36 percent in February 2005." I wonder if Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies can explain this, since she wrote me this past April: "Since you're monitoring the U.S. press and anti-war movement so closely i assume you are familiar with the rising polls of anti-war sentiment and the near 2/3 of americans who say bring the troops home -- our challenge is how to empower that sentiment into political action at a moment when the supposed opposition party is frightened and supine [sic!], rendering congress largely unwilling to challenge the white house." I almost felt sorry for the "frightened and supine" Democratic Party. Almost...

The Daze of the Living Dead
Zbignew Zingh, www.dissidentvoice.org
... Are you in a coma? Your reputation's sinking fast. You shop, wave flags, you watch TV. But are these days of living death? You seem to be oblivious to everything around you. You build and sell the missiles that the world shoots at each other. Your cows are mad, pollution's bad, your ballots are not counted. America, have you been outside? The weather's getting hotter! Your old folks cannot pay their bills, you never can retire. You're snookered time and time again to help the rich inherit wealth while you fight over bread crumbs. You send your children into War; tell me, for what? So Wall Street and the corporate cats can profit while they grind kids' bones and send you back their ashes? Because there are no better jobs than working in a fast food joint or serving lattes by the pint? America, are you dozing? ...

A New Front
Not a New War

Archie Kennedy
The bombing and upcoming invasion of Lebanon is not a new war. It is a third and massive new front on an ongoing gambit aimed at subduing the whole of the Middle East. Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Lebanon are flash points in American designs on ideally positioning themselves in the middle of the global chessboard. Control of this area is important at a time when Asian thirst for oil is growing.

Alan Dershowitz uses holocaust logic to defend Israel from war crimes charges
Stephen Soldz
In what would be a new low, except that his moral reasoning always seeks the bottom, Alan Dershowitz argues in the Los Angeles Times that not all civilian lives are equal. Those who fail to get out of the way of the Israeli murder machine are "complicit" and are not to be counted among the innocent victims. First he distinguishes between those true "innocents" and those who aid Israeli opponents, designated only as "terrorists" (...) But who are those who aid the terrorists, who are not to be counted as among the innocents? It turns out to include all those who fail to heed warnings get out of the way of the Israeli war machine: The Israeli army has given well-publicized notice to civilians to leave those areas of southern Lebanon that have been turned into war zones. Those who voluntarily remain behind have become complicit. Some - those who cannot leave on their own - should be counted among the innocent victims. Presumably, if Israel orders all Lebanese to leave their country, any who stay will deserve their fate. After all, this has been the logic Israel has used against Palestinians who resist occupation and expropriation of their land for decades...

Bombings Hit Children Hardest Dahr Jamail
Dahr Jamail
About 55 percent of all casualties at the Beirut Government University Hospital are children of 15 years of age or less, hospital records show. "This is worse than during the Lebanese civil war," Bilal Masri, assistant director of the hospital, one of Beirut’s largest, told IPS Monday. Not only are most of the patients children, but many of the injured have been brought in serious condition, he said. "Now we have a 30 percent fatality rate here in Beirut. That means that 30 percent of everyone hit by Israeli bombs are dying. It is a catastrophe."...

"Aren't people seeing all of this?"
Dahr Jamail's Weblog
Hundreds of Lebanese refugees languish in a city park in downtown Beirut. Fleeing southern Lebanon, as well as south Beirut, thousands have already made their way through this camp as they are farmed out to schools, abandoned buildings and anyone willing to take them in. "Aren't people seeing all of this," asked Supinesh, a 50 year-old woman sitting with her family while children collected water from a nearby UNESCO water tank, "They should see the massacres, then they can decide who is just in this conflict." After spending about an hour there, we decided to go see some of the damage in southern Beirut. Not wanting to go too deep into the demolished area, our driver said he could show us some of it without taking much risk. It still wasn't in the Dahaya district of Beirut, which is the area which has, according to many observers, been 75% destroyed...

A conversation with a (Corporate) Cockroach
William Bowles, I'n'I
... Indeed, I would argue that the barbarity that is Lebanon is a carefully calculated 'experiment’ to see what kind of reaction we in the rich world would have, in much the same way as the destruction of Yugoslavia served (or the Gulf War of 1990-91) or perhaps even more to the point, how the German Nazis used the Spanish Civil War to test out mass, aerial bombardment or the US the Vietnam War to test new and untried weapons systems. If the reactions of the great mass of the populations are anything to go by, the destruction of Lebanon has on this basis, been a resounding success (with the able assistance of course, of the Mass Media in hiding the reality from us, and also through the wall of Israeli propaganda, justifying the awful slaughter and destruction. Consider also how the 'War on Terror’ fits into this scenario, for in order to pull it off, it needs a total Security State complete with all manner of 'legal’, social control mechanisms, in the UK personified by the Civil Contingencies Bill as well as the various 'anti-terrorism’ legislations.

Israeli Military Censor orders all media in Israel to comply with Censorship order
IMEMC & Agencies
As the dual Israeli invasions of Lebanon and Palestine continue unabated, local and international journalists covering the conflict have been affected by orders from the Israeli military censor's office not to report successful hits by Hezbollah into Israel. A document leaked by international journalists, issued by the Israeli military censor's office on the 16th of July, reads: "Censorship Policy Regarding Fighting in the North; 1.As of now, over 1,200 rockets have been fired at Israel; it is expected that this will continue. 2.Therefore, following are the Military Censor's relevant guidelines: a.The Military Censor will not approve reports regarding visits of Israeli Government and IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] officials in the north of Israel until the visits are over due to the clear connection between officials' visits and missile attacks on the area in question. b.The Military Censor will not approve reports on missile hits at IDF bases and/or strategic facilities...

Israeli invasion of Lebanon was planned over a year ago
R. Lee, Oxford, UK, Special to Ya Libnan
...Can there in fact be any doubt that what we are seeing in the Lebanon and the unleashing of Bush's attack dog, is an illegal invasion which was done totally with the prior agreement of Bush and his poodle? Israel must be made to pay for the damage they have caused and pay compensation to their victims just as Iraq was in the case of Kuwait. The difficulty caused by the USA/Bolton being an instrument of sabotage as far as the UN goes can be overcome by the non Security Council members initiating an "Uniting for Peace" Resolution which essentially requires a two thirds majority in the UN and allowing the Security Council to be bypassed. We need International, not just personal, boycotts of Israeli produce and they should continue until the apartheid state is dismantled...

More to Lebanon War than Meets the Eye
Ramzy Baroud
At first glance, history seems to repeat itself in Lebanon, where a lengthy cold war is intermittently interrupted by an extreme show of violence as traditional players quickly sprint into action, stacking their support behind one party or the other. News headlines remind us of past conflicts such as that of 1978 – when Israel illegally occupied parts of Lebanon – and 1982 – when Israel unleashed a full scale invasion and most deadly campaign against its small neighbor to the north, killing tens of thousands, mostly civilians. But the unreserved significance of the ongoing conflict has more to do with Israel's military ambitions – not necessarily colonial, but rather strategic - than with Hizbollah's ability to strike deep into Israel...

Israeli Occupation Forces: Killing For the Sake of Killing
Rami Almeghari
Since the Israeli military aggression on the Gaza Strip started on June 27th, Israeli ground forces and warplanes have been killing Palestinian men, women and children, destroying the Palestinian economy and devastating the infrastructure, all under a single pretext: liberating Gil'ad Shalit, a soldier who is being held by Palestinian resistance groups. More than 150 Palestinians including women and children in their homes, most recently in the Shuja'ya neighborhood of Gaza City, early on Friday, have been so far slaughtered at Gil'ad's butchery. Hundreds of others have been wounded, many of them lost their body parts, because of Israel's use of deadly weapons believed to be illegal under what used to be called 'international law'...

Leviathan run amok. The formidable Hizbullah
Pepe Escobar and editorial commentary by Les Blough, Axis of Logic
...Hizbullah is of course fighting a classic guerilla war not unlike that of the Iraqi, Afghan and Palestinian Resistance Forces. The well-trained and highly disciplined Hizbullah troops are reminiscent of the soldiers of Vietnam who fought for their land and their homes, running the U.S. out of their country in what in the early years was thought to be an asymmetrical war. The Israeli invaders are likewise to be compared to U.S. and British soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan whose commitment is inherently compromised and will weakened by their illegal, unprovoked invasions and craven, indiscriminant bombardment of civilians. Yates quoted Timur Goksel, former spokesman for U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon: "Their capability is more than we thought it was. They come together for operations then they disperse. They keep their weapons in homes, caves, they disperse them." Pepe Escobar's analysis (below) reinforces this view of the balance of force that may very well be the undoing of the Israeli Occupation Forces. One thing is certain: If Israel has the courage (or foolhardiness) to face Hizbullah on the ground after already cowardly massacring at least 400 Lebanese civilians from missiles and aerial bombing, the weeks or months that follow will indeed be bloody. Responsibility for every drop of spilt blood on both sides rests squarely on the heads of the sociopaths who made decisions to war in Tel Aviv and Washington...

Blowing up the UN; missile hide n seek; deaths that matter less; realpolitik for the oppressed.
Lenin's Tomb
You might have thought, folks, that when I cited comments suggesting that the UN be blown up, I was merely reflecting the views of a few extremists. However, Israel likes to knock the UN about a bit. Alex Cockburn's excellent latest on Counterpunch, for instance, discusses the fact when the UN passed resolutions against Israel's previous occupation of Lebanon, prompted by the fear that the Palestinians' "peace offensive" might work, General Sharon bombed Beirut on the exact minute that each of the resolutions were passed. I can't vouch for the exactitude of the timing in this case, but Israel appears to have punished the UN for its latest outrage in describing Israeli violations of international humanitarian law by bombing UNIFIL positions fifteen times. Oh, and they also bombed Red Cross ambulances - 26 of them...

Bearing Witness
Chris Floyd
Read this story. This is real journalism: "I was there. I saw this. This is what happened." No watering-down with weasel words and justifications, no shoe-horning of chest-thumping rhetoric from the rainmakers of deathstorms. Real journalism, the straight stuff -- on the front page of the Washington Post, no less. Who says the age of miracles is over? This is also the real picture of the "war on terror," which has killed far more civilians – by several magnitudes – than terrorists. This is the reality of the "opportunity" that Bush always says he sees in war: "Through my tears, I see opportunity," he said while the Twin Towers were still smoldering; the war of aggression against Iraq was an "opportunity" to "remake the Middle East;" and now this proxy WOT, Israel's wanton destruction of Lebanon, is an "opportunity" to "clarify the situation" or the "birth pangs of a new Middle East" or some other mush-mouthed bullshit dribbling from the Great Leader's gob or from the snapping orifices of his Foxidated spokesminions. Such is the hideous moral calculus of raw, blind, blunt power; such is the depravity of these bloodthirsty Bushist goons.

The feeble stirrings of the American immune system?
Xymphora
Alan Senitt was the British Zionist agent infiltrated into the pre-Presidential campaign of former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, presumably to ensure that Warner stayed on the straight and narrow ultra-Zionist path with respect to the Middle East (note how the Washington Times tries to downplay this connection, a sure sign of shenanigans). Warner is a possible Democrat presidential candidate should Hillary make everyone sick and Gore stick by his guns and continue to refuse to run. It is frightening to see the preparation of the International Zionist Conspiracy, already in control of a Presidential campaign months before the campaigning has even begun. This is how the Lobby works...

'Civilians bearing brunt of conflict'
Firas Al-Atraqchi
The Lebanese government has said Lebanon is on the verge of a humanitarian disaster as foodstuffs, medicines and basic necessities are quickly being depleted under an Israeli naval, land and aerial blockade. Middle East spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Nada Doumani says international humanitarian law dictates that the blockade imposed on Lebanon must not prevent foodstuffs and other essential supplies from reaching the civilian population...
