Resistance regards "elections" under occupation as illegitimate, but media focus on US-backed process Thursday.

Under the control of the US occupation regime and in accordance with an American-imposed time-table, Thursday was an "election day" in occupied Iraq. With offices and institutions ordered closed by the puppet regime, Iraqis were urged to cast ballots in an "election" for a "parliament" concocted on the basis of a "constitution" drafted by an American Zionist law professor and imposed by force of US arms.

Iraqi Resistance organizations made clear that they consider any elections held under the guns of the occupation to be un-free, illegal, and illegitimate. In previous elections nearly all the Sunni population and many of the Shi'ah, and Kurdish citizens as well stayed away from the polls. The American-sponsored balloting went ahead anyway, regardless of considerations of international law or local opinion, and US President Bush hailed such coercion by an occupying army as a "triumph of democracy."

With Shi'i sectarian militias, often in their puppet police uniforms, rounding up Sunnis and torturing and killing them in frequent sweeps around the country – a practice that has greatly increased since the Shi'i sectarian government of Ibrahim al-Ja'fari took over after the last, January, round of "elections" – many Iraqi Sunnis on Thursday voted in the US-run polls simply in the hopes of reducing the occurrence of such horrors. Ultimate power in the country has been and will remain in the hands of the US occupation forces, however, so nothing of importance can be expected to change without American say-so. The elections, in addition to being an illegal imposition by an occupying power under international law, are also unlikely to effect any significant change in the lives of Iraqis.

Nevertheless, with the "spread of democracy" one of the key American justifications for its invasion of Iraq (the fabled "weapons of mass destruction" never having materialized), the "elections" on Thursday once again captured most of the attention of the media in the country. Resistance operations themselves, or at least coverage of them, was therefore greatly diminished.

Resistance bombards "Green Zone" Thursday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 9:15am Mecca time Thursday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that four explosions rocked the area around the Republican Palace in downtown Baghdad – the area called the "Green Zone" by the US forces, where the US occupation and the puppet Iraqi regime have their heavily guarded headquarters.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a security source in the area as claiming that the four blasts, which were the result of mortar shells or rockets blasting into the area, inflicted no casualties.

US military admit one Marine killed in ar-Ramadi Wednesday, one US soldier wounded in "Green Zone" Thursday morning.

In a statement issued Thursday and monitored by al-Jazeera satellite TV, the US occupation forces admitted that one American in the ar-Ramadi area on Wednesday.
