Unfolded in the Series of Failures
A new event has unfolded in the series of failures to unite and and stop Assad’s crimes against civilians. The meeting of the Contact Group on Syria in Geneva concluded with an agreement on a transitional period to resolve Syria’s crisis. This was a superficial participation by the Russian government who remains the regime’s main ally as it continues to provide military support amid international pressure.
The new agreement provides vague language which is open to interpretation. This provides yet another opportunity for the regime’s thugs to play their favorite game in utilizing time in order to stop the popular Syrian Revolution and extinguish it with violence and massacres across Syria.
We in the Local Coordination Committees in Syria are confident that the regime will not react positively to any political resolution as has been previously evidenced by former initiatives. In the midst of the UN observer mission, the regime violated Kofi Annan’s non-binding peace initiative by escalating violence, torture, and sieges against civilians across Syria. During Kofi Annan’s initiative, the number of Syrians fleeing the country increased. The regime has massacred tens of thousands of peaceful civilians demanding freedom with the meeting in Geneva coinciding with at least 174 Syrian deaths committed by regime forces. The current Syrian regime will not relinquish their power nor provide a suitable environment for a transitional government in order to fulfill the constitutional reforms necessary. The current Syrian regime will not allow a free and fair election as stipulated by the agreement.
The Local Coordinating Committees is very concerned over the ambiguous formulation of and the wording of the agreement which has lightly addressed a very serious issue. Also of concern is the regime accountability for crimes committed against humanity as confirmed by credible organizations, such as the Human Rights Council and other international human rights organizations. In addition, we are gravely concerned over the military and security forces’ role during the transitional period due to the crimes committed by its members. These are core conflicts between the Revolutionaries and Bashar al-Assad’s pillars and symbols whose hands are stained with blood and must be excluded from the transitional phase. No Syrian will accept a regime waiver of responsibility over crimes and violations against human rights.
The LCC re-emphasize the goals of the Syrian Revolution to be the ouster of this regime with all of its symbols, pillars and foundations. The LCC demands the trial of the criminals, the restructuring of the security apparatus, and re-establishing an army based on a civil, political, and pluralistic society. These foundations will not be sacrificed at any cost. The committees will utilize revolutionary forces and the civil and political activities of the Syrian people until we attain freedom from tyranny and the criminal.
Victory to the Revolution of Dignity and Glory to the Martyrs
